Grim operatives of the Surete Nationale raided across France to arrest leaders of a thwarted plot to topple the republic for dictatorship. Police seized documents showing plans for an uprising and a map of Paris sewer passages with depot locations, targeting the Chamber of Deputies.
Nat Terrell, 21, described as colored, attacked five people in the colored district on Halloween night. One victim injured severely and sent to Crownsville Insane Asylum. Terrell sentenced to six months in Washington County Jail by Justice C Edward Heard. Victims include Joe Bennett and Jerry Adams, with injuries ranging from six broken teeth to stab wounds. two women among the harmed.
The Board of License Commissioners cites Joe Pennesi of 20 Madison Avenue to appear on December 2 and show cause why his beer license should not be suspended or revoked for permitting beer to be consumed on the premises after closing hours.
U S Weather Bureau predicts fair and warmer conditions tonight in Maryland. Thursday will be mostly cloudy and warmer with occasional rain Thursday night and Friday. Chesapeake Bay trend mirrors inland with fair and warm conditions tonight and a Thursday turn to clouds and rain, winds shifting to fresh Thursday night and Friday.
Austin dispatch reports Albert Sidney Burleson former Postmaster General and longtime public servant died at his Austin home at age 74 after months of decline. Survived by widow Adele Steiner Burleson three daughters two sisters and six grandchildren. Burleson served in Congress eight terms and led postal service efforts during World War I supporting drafts food conservation and bond drives.
Alfred Solman 69, noted songwriter of The Bird On Nellies Hat and When the Harbor Lights Are Burning, died in New York. His works included numerous popular songs and he was a prominent figure in early 20th century American music.
New York reports Thanksgiving meal plans for the U S Army. Army regs require 162000 soldiers receive at least one and three quarters pounds of turkey each. It will take about 19 hours to consume 141 tons of turkey.
In Pittsfield Illinois Rev C E Newton was convicted of murdering a church worker in a July hammer attack on Mrs Dennis Kelly of Paris Missouri. The jury imposed life imprisonment after a six hour verdict. Newton planned to seek a new trial and vowed to take the case to a higher court.
The manslaughter case of Lford Moser will be taken up in circuit court this afternoon. State's Attorney Martin L. Ingram said Moser is charged with forcing Ralph A. Lunk off Ringgold Routerville road on May 23, causing Funk to die riding a motorcycle. Two bastardy cases were tried this morning with Wilbur Sampsell convicted by the court.
Two youths robbed Russell Keller, a Middletown filling station operator, then fled in a car with $23. Police identified the suspects as Harold Williams, 17, and Raymond Heffelfinger, 23, of Conshohocken, Pa. They admitted the holdup and a revolver used during the crime was found in the car. Keller said he previously served a two year term on a Georgia chain gang.
Two men clashed over how they got a Thanksgiving turkey as they were stopped for a red light. Police took the men to jail while the six plump birds were placed in the city dog pound, saving their lives temporarily.
City and county offices will be closed tomorrow along with all business houses. The Library and Chamber of Commerce will also shut for the holiday and the Circuit Court will not be in session.

The Securities Commission told the New York Stock Exchange to prepare for a federal housecleaning unless Wall Street stabilizes the market. Chairman W O Douglas accused professionals of amplifying market swings and urged exchanges to yield control to those with clearer public responsibility. He said the SEC and exchanges may share responsibility to insulate the economy from shocks.
New York November 24 Alexander D Arcy actor nursed a black eye and bruises but won a $1,000 bet for lasting two minutes with McKinley Bryant at the New York Athletic Club. Bryant, a writer and former prizefighter, offered the wager at a supper club table. D Arcy accepted and endured the two minute beating until the bell rang.
Sheriff Max C. Malott announced a campaign against chicken thefts that have plagued the county for two weeks. He suspects out of state gangs and will seek help from neighboring counties and states. Rob ert Liskey faced two raids at Halfwar, losing 40 hens then scaring off the intruders with a gun. John Rohrer in Trego reported 30 hens stolen. Two men later tried to sell about 30 birds to a Middle town dealer before fleeing toward Frederick.
Ocean City officials say more than a million pounds of fish were caught by 52 deep sea fishing boats last summer. Each boat averaged 20,000 pounds, totaling 1,040,000 pounds, according to Mayor W. Thomas Elliott.
In a special meeting the Williamsport Board of Education deadlocked on applying for a federal grant of about 166000 for a new high school. Three members favored the proposal while three opposed it, with citizens and WPA workers watching as arguments cited fireproofing, future needs, and winter employment as reasons to approve. A trustee presented petitions signed by 275 Williamsport residents and called attention to a public resolution.
Baltimore on November 24 1937 about 195000 or two thirds of Maryland motorists have failed to obtain new permits required by the 1937 act. Harry S Bullen registration supervisor warns that all licenses issued before January 1 1927 will be void after January 1 1938. Only 30 working days remain for the 195000 renewals. Bullen notes 255709 applications received but a last minute rush is expected.
President Roosevelt and Mrs Roosevelt will eat their first White House Thanksgiving turkey as the Warm Springs tradition is on hold due to his tooth infection. Only James Roosevelt Betsey and 5 year old Sara expected at dinner with Sara's bedtime shaping the schedule. The turkey may come from Arthurdale West Virginia cooperative community built by the government.
United Automobile Workers strike at Ford Motor St Louis assembly plant after a morning demonstration. About 150 pickets guard two entrances while 1200 workers from CIO unions rallied, with CIO regional director Desmond Garst saying the plant will not operate and pledging firm actions to pursue grievances over alleged union discrimination in rehiring after layoffs.
Circuit Judge Lester S. Moll dismissed felonious assault charges against Ford Motor Company and eight individuals over the beating of United Automobile Workers' organizers near the Ford Rouge plant on May 26.

At a Christ mas Tree Association meeting plans were made for a community Christmas tree and the annual treat for Williamsport children. No fundraising will be solicited this year but contributions may be given to Poffenberger, Delawter, Wine, Ainsworth, Poole, Robinson, Hoff man, or Kretsinger. A community sing is set at 9 p m on Christmas Eve, followed by Christmas boxes for children on Christmas morning with Boy Scouts escorting a parade from the high school at 9 a m.
City Engineer Joseph Lron is to prepare a 100000 street construction plan for Hagerstown to submit to the Works Progress Administration. M W Springer, WPA Western Maryland supervisor, told Major W Lee Elgin that winter operating projects will be needed and an approved street program is expected. He indicated WPA rolls in the city may rise this winter.
In Oakland and vicinity residents endured one of the coldest days of the season with a reading of three below zero before 6 am and snow on the ground. D Paul Oswald Chewsville observer recorded the figures. By noon the temperature rose to 31 degrees as a heavy frost formed and ice thickened.
The WPA approved project will begin Monday with fourteen workers laying 27 inch concrete pipe along the east side of Rose Hill Cemetery from Willow Lane to the Baltimore & Ohio railroad crossing. Harold F. Seibert, local WPA supervisor, announced the plan.
H. 5. Jennings, 42, of 309 North Prospect Street, convicted of stealing a pair of shoes, was sentenced to thirty days in jail by Justice C. Edward Heard in city court yesterday.

The city secures a promise to pay of 25 to 30 WPA workers for the southeast storm water drain project approved by Washington. Work likely to start next week with completion by spring as the drain passes through truck land end of South Mulberry Street. The project aims to relieve flood conditions in South Mulberry Lee and Ray streets.
Gov Benson asked Attorney General Cummings to deploy Justice agents to help solve the Patrick J. Corcoran assassination. William Mauseth, CIO leader, said he was ordered to leave town or face harm. Mauseth, ex-AFOI breakaway machinists union member, alleged sluggers were imported from Chicago to terrorize. He reported five threatening calls in 20 minutes, two received while police were at his home.
In Salt Lake City a motorist sped past Ab Jenkins, famed for distance speed records, and Jenkins pursued. He handed a 16 year old high school boy to police, saying speed is fine only in a race.
