From Our Reporters Notebook notes a Waynesboro auction of Mrs. Gilbert Nicodemus estate where Dresden china lamps sold for 200 dollars and a cherry arch cupboard brought 2035 dollars. Other items included a pair of porcelain figures 240 dollars a white overlay bowl 57.50 a desk 230 and a grandfather clock 440 dollars.
Paris reports Robert Schuman finance minister and MRP member agreed to form a new French government. He announced after a conference with President Vincent Auriol and headed to the finance ministry for talks with party leaders to seek a vote of confidence amid Communist engineered labor unrest. The chamber had refused to back Leon Blum and Ramadier had resigned under pressure as strikes spread.
Dr. Crown QO. Diehl, chairman of the Washington County Tuberculosis and Health Association, announced that the seals for the annual Christmas Seal sale have been posted for mailing and should be delivered by Monday. The mailing list contains about 7,100 addresses and the sale runs from November 24 to Christmas, with returns counted at headquarters. He notes cooperation from Troop 16 Girl Scouts, Troop 2 Boy Scouts, and Hagerstown Business College students who assisted with the seals and envelopes.
Baltimore on November 22 five state license inspectors under Comptroller James J. Lacy begin an enforcement drive against about 3000 local contractors lacking licenses. City Council VP William J. Muth said more than $358000 in back license fees are owed. A circuit court suit seeks to divert city collected fees since June 30 to the state coffers, challenging Attorney General Hall Hammond’s ruling that state jurisdiction applies under the Shervo tax plan.
The Cotton county sheriff nabbed 18 year old W A Bennett after he walked into an ambush at an old cotton gin. He admitted burglaries since last April while jailed for hardware store burglary and described nightly escapes from a cell to rob homes and stores. Loot included cameras pipes watches rings guns cash clothing and luggage. Bennett faced a suspended sentence but was captured before release.
In Berlin, Russian occupation authorities accuse Britain, France and the United States of violating Potsdam and other agreements in Germany. Marshall Sokolovsky delivered a 25 page list at the Allied Control Council meeting, calling for public release of the charges to aid full record and study.
Pietro Nenni, former foreign minister and pro-Communist Socialist leader, predicts a general strike across Italy to protest violence against workers. He said mass parties must defend workers and cited past Milan labor actions. The nation has seen bloody demonstrations and sporadic strikes as leftists press against the De Gasperi government.
Erie Pennsylvania records 1,500 job vacancies with the State Employment Service reporting no prospect of filling them soon. Unemployment figures show employment at an all time high 42,035, surpassing wartime peak of 40,364.
The Senate foreign relations committee urged speed on a 597 million dollar aid measure for France Austria and Italy to stave off cold hunger and chaos. Introduced by Vandenberg and Conally the bill faces debate Monday after a 13 to 0 committee vote and House consideration continues behind closed doors with no final appropriation bill yet drafted.
Medford M. Humphrey 35 of near Hagerstown was fined $13.50 plus costs after a right-of-way violation in a Franklin County crash. Police say he traveled south a mile from Waynesboro airport when Edwin Frey of near Chambersburg, traveling east, collided at an intersection. Damage was about $100 to Humphrey’s car and $50 to Frey’s.
Garland Groh, who employees several men on a remodeling project on Elizabeth Street, told police that during lunch hours thieves steal large quantities of building material from the site.
Robert L. Ritchie of 134 East Washington Street fractured his left ankle while playing football yesterday afternoon. Attendants in the emergency room of Washington County Hospital applied a cast.
Secretary of State George C. Marshall indicated a firm push for early completion of an Austrian independence treaty at the Big Four Foreign Ministers Conference opening next Tuesday. He arrived from Washington with an open mind on German peace issues, while Moscow aims to seize assets in Austria. The deadlock centers on what Germans owned in Austria and whether heavy seizures would destabilize Austria or cede control to foreign powers. Withdrawal of occupation troops would follow a swift Austrian treaty, officials say.
The United Nations prepared for a final decision on Palestine partition after ten weeks of debate as delegates, exhausted, expected adjournment by Tuesday. The assembly moved quickly to finish remaining business and awaited the main issue. A U.S. proposal gained approval to have the new “little assembly” study veto reform proposals, a controversial topic at the U.N.
Completing an orientations and indoctrination course at Newton D. Baker VA Center, six Hagerstown residents were certified for regular hospital volunteer service. Names listed: Mrs. Leslie W. Manners, Mrs. Hubert Mullen, Grace L. Eckstine, Catherine Martin, Helena A. Rees e, and Ruth Savers. Dr. E. L. Cook presented the certificates.
Mrs. Clara Smith of 118 Clarkson Avenue was warned by Magistrate Harry F. Snyder in city court today to discontinue loud radio play after midnight. The warrant, sworn by neighbor Mrs. Lela Sheldon of 120 Clarkson Avenue, charged her with making loud and unnecessary noises. The charge was dismissed after her promise to stop the loud radio.
Five people escaped serious injury after a collision between a westbound auto driven by George A. Dixon and a southbound train at the West Washington street crossing of the Pennsylvania Railroad. Dixon and four passengers, Goldie Boyce, Glenn Trumpower, Mrs. Madalene Dixon, and her 7 month old daughter Connie, were shaken but unhurt. Dixon said he failed to hear or see the crossing signal and pulled into the train’s path after stopping at Walnut Street. The car was pinned between the engine and a railroad car, the front end badly smashed. Officer C. B. Bikle investigated.
Three building permits totaling $1,125 were approved this week by the City Building Inspector, underscoring a continuing construction slump since November 1. Recipients include Fred Boward on Maryland Avenue for porch enclosures, Paul Zaflais on East Franklin Street for a dwelling foundation, David R. Williams on John Street for a dwelling addition, and Philip J. DeBiase for a temporary foundation permit for a store with apartments on North Cleveland Avenue.
Two alarms responded to morning incidents with no serious damage. Western Enterprise and the Pioneers quelled a chimney fire at Freemont Street and Carlton Avenue. A second fire involved an electrical motor short in a Packard automobile at Franklin and Jonathan streets, stopped quickly by First Hose, Hook and Ladder, and Antietams using chemicals.
The local real estate market showed a slow week with total sales under 100000 and 90 percent of transactions involving residential properties. Deals included Spielman to Hoover for a Rose Hill dwelling at 6500 and Blume to Smith for a Brown Avenue residence at 12000 among others.
Washington County health officials report one infantile paralysis death this fall. Five year old Joseph E. Krouse died after onset October 1 and death October 4 in his home on Memorial boulevard. Two prior summer cases are recovering, while a 12 year old in a Baltimore hospital remains in serious condition.
City Clerk Eldon Kenney announced the Municipal Market will open next Wednesday instead of Tuesday to provide fresh supplies for Thanksgiving. The market normally operates on Tuesdays and Saturdays during winter months.
Washington November 22 The Senate War Investigating Sub-Committee closed its inquiry into Bennett E Meyers wartime dealings and sent the record to prosecuting officers for possible criminal action after General Henry H Hap Arnold testified a high ranking officer disgraced his uniform and rank. Chairman Ferguson outlined steps to involve the Banking Committee the Attorney General and a Federal District Attorney to examine bonds perjury and related matters. Hatch urged continuation of testimony and scrutiny.
Coldest weather in the nation swept the eastern Rockies and plains as Casper Wyoming fell to 17 below zero. Sub-zero readings appeared in Nebraska, the Dakotas, and Kansas while snow mixed with rain across the Midwest and Mississippi Valley. Temperatures mellowed toward Washington County with a 33 degree low and showers expected tonight.
