Chicago reports at the start of the sixth week of decontrolled markets prices for live cattle and hogs stay near post removal records. Cattle topped at 37.09 per cwt, hogs up to 24.75 with a 27.50 peak earlier, amid higher receipts and meat supplies. Feed lots in the Midwest expand as cold storage meat holdings rise and subsidies support cattle and hog prices.
Indiana State police flushed two youths from a corn field who confessed to armed robberies in Washington County. Hubert Gabbart 20 and Paul Myers Jr 16 of Oakland City Ind were linked to robbing two men on Route 40 last Thursday and stealing one man’s automobile. They assaulted an Indianapolis man Sunday night, forcing $23 from him at gunpoint as he repaired his car. They abducted Keifer R Koogle a Baltimore motorist on Thursday, forced clothing exchange, robbed him of $65 and his watch, and drove with him before nearly reaching Hagerstown.
The Board of Election Supervisors announced the courthouse office is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for new registrations and transfers, with Saturdays closing at noon. Many who intended to be citizens but did not register are urged to register to vote. The board also said election bills have been tabulated and payments will be issued next week.
The kitchen of Benj. Summers at 119 Bloom's Avenue was damaged by a morning fire started by an overheated stove. Fire companies responded with booster pumps and quickly extinguished the blaze.
Constance Wibberly Laign filed a divorce suit in court today against McClure William Laign. It is the eighteenth suit filed this month.
Street Superintendent Charlies W. Stump says budget hearings start soon with a large alley paving and street oiling program planned. Three miles of alleys to be paved in two years and much oiling postponed by war will be done next year. Winter work limited to patching. Devonshire road and West Washington sewer and water lines to be laid amid material shortages.
Arthur M. Moats through D K McLaughlin filed a damage suit in court against Merle L. Lescaleet over an October 9 collision at Antietam and Locust streets. Moats claims serious head injuries due to negligence. Both men were charged with reckless driving and found not guilty by Magistrate Harry E. Snyder in city court yesterday.

Magistrate Snyder fined William A. McSherry of 408 George Street five dollars and costs for permitting his dog to run at large after SPCA investigator Hafer reported multiple complaints. McSherry pleaded not guilty claiming the dog escaped from a penned yard and did not permit it to roam freely.

In Bucharest nearly 10 million Romanians chose a new parliament in a ballot marked by Western criticism of bias. Premier Petru Groza's Communist-dominated bloc sought victory on the historical note that Romanian governments never lose elections, while opposition groups pushed for a capitalist middle class regime and calmer ties with Russia. British and American protests over disrupted campaigns framed the vote in the context of Yalta pledges for free elections.
Keedysville weather observer J A Miller reported the coldest night of the season with a 26 degree low and heavy frost. Ground was frozen about an inch in places, a record of forty two years shows only one November below zero, on November 27, 1938, at four below. Yesterday’s high reached 52 and low 29.
Maxwell Yingling reported to police that tools are being stolen and the unfinished house on Potomac Heights is being damaged at night. He asked officers to periodically check the site.
Washington on November 19 A Congressional investigation by the House Banking Committee opens in January to determine if government controls hinder rather than promote new veterans housing construction.
Joshua Rice, 48, a Frederick county farmer near Bethel, suffered the loss of both hands yesterday afternoon after he apparently fell into a circular saw while cutting logs on his farm.
Afghanistan Iceland and Sweden joined the United Nations, boosting membership to 54. In a formal ceremony in New York, Abdul Hosayn Aziz Thor Thors and Oesten Unden signed the adherence to the UN Charter, with Paul Henri Spaak and Trygve Lie overseeing the signing.
In Gettysburg Pa on November 19 1946 the town marked the 83rd anniversary of Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address with a parade and ceremonies at the National Cemetery. Rep Jennings Randolph of West Virginia was the principal speaker and four high school students performed the famous dirge. The address was repeated at the exact spot where Lincoln spoke in 1863.
Dispatches report Greek guerrillas have seized 100 of the 194 villages in the Grevena region of western Macedonia about 80 miles southwest of the Greek Yugoslav border. Independent local governments were established in the seized area while Grevena remains under government control, housing Governor-General Anastasios Dalipis.
Hugh K Troxell county treasurer said the office has collected 95.2 percent of the 1946 levy and that today’s collections are the best in the office’s history. He noted 99.3 percent of the 1945 levy has been received, with only nine small 1944 bills and one 1943 bill outstanding, the latter in litigation. He attributed the strength to good times and ready cash driving payments.

He alleges the ship’s master compelled him to drink salt water despite available fresh water and a failed evaporator.

Sheriff’s deputies hunt a thief who backed a vehicle into Daniel Stotler’s Broadfording road corn field and carried off 16 barrels of choice ears. Stotler reports the theft occurred Saturday or Sunday night and note the thief took only prime ears leaving imperfect ones. Deputy Reynolds says clues may identify the culprit.
