New York Nov 16 The wreck cost of the Vestris is estimated at $5,000,000 exclusive of survivor and next of kin claims. Insurance losses are placed at $4,000,000 with about $1,000,000 on the vessel. Rescue costs from other ships may total $20,000, and lines face further losses from fuel, supplies, and radio costs.
Ten survivors of the liner Vestris, saved from the sea, booked new passage to resume voyages to South America. Six sail on the Lamport and Holt Voltaire, larger than the Vestris, departing Hoboken November 24. three on the Munson South ern Cross tomorrow. Paul A. Dana, who spent 22 hours in the water, plans to resume his trip, undecided which vessel to take.
Lewis Watts, colored, was arrested yesterday for stealing gloves from the McCrory Store. He was paroled this morning by Justice Harry E. Snyder on good behavior promise after a girl employee alerted staff and he was held until Patrolman Leonard Saylor arrived.
In Chicago on November 16, Fred D. Stevens drove his car through a funeral procession for state representative Thos Curran. His vehicle collided with another, killing Stevens. The incident occurred as mourners moved along the street.
The sheriff's office launches its annual check on merchants without trader licenses. Deputy Clarence Emmert reviews records and warns about warrants if licenses are not obtained within days. About 100 delinquents are targeted, excluding contractors who face a $5,000 license. Around a dozen applicants acted this morning.
Joseph Allgire aged 25 of Brunswick was killed last night when he fell under his B. & O. train in Brunswick yards. His body was badly mangled. The Allgire family is prominent in Brunswick with his mother on the Democratic state central committee. He had worked for the railroad about five years.
Washington dispatch reports the government rested its case today in the perjury trial of Robert W. Stewart, chairman of the board of Standard Oil Co. of Indiana, as defense counsel moved for the jury to return a not guilty verdict.
J. S. Jones of this city received ninety days in lieu of a 100 dollar fine for driving while intoxicated after arraignment before Justice J. H. Bitner in city court. He was connected to a Sunday accident and allegedly failed to stop his vehicle.
Baltimore November 16 Boy Scout Troop No 63 members who found John Beynon Sr dying in Garretts woods after police searches declined a $500 reward. They say they were simply doing their duty as scouts.
Sir James Heath, husband of Lady Heath, declares in a public notice that he withdraws authority for her to pledge his credit. He will not be responsible for her debt, noting their marriage provided her with all suitable necessities. The notice appeared in newspapers from London dated November 16.

PHILADELPHIA, Nov. 16 Doctor Moses Stern who practiced medicine for 50 years and urged reforms died at his home. He saw some reforms adopted notably bobbed hair for women. He preferred a law compelling males to marry at 21 and females at 18, though he remained a bachelor.
George F Bloom former manager of Newark Shoe Store has accepted a general manager post at the Hagerstown Department Store. Bloom earlier operated a furniture store in this city.
The Imperial Merchants Service Guild cabled New York lawyers to defend the good name of their late member Captain William J. Carey of the Vestris at the official inquiry in New York.
William Mitchell of Millstone charged with assaulting Elmer Appel state wide deputy game warden. Hearing set before Justice George C. Huber at Hancock. Appel based at Isaac Walton preserve near Hancock. Mitchell and two brothers John and Ross and George Diehl were arrested Wednesday across Allegany county line for hunting in that county on Washington County licenses. Diehl to have Allegany hearing tonight. Mitchell dismissed on hunting charge but to be arraigned for assault.
Logan West Virginia chief of police A D Skaggs was jailed charged with firing at Brooks Carey at the Logan Fire Department headquarters shortly after midnight. Authorities say the shooting followed Skaggs attempting to arrest Carey on a disorderly conduct charge amid lingering animosity from the recent election.
The body of Mrs. Pearl Huntzing er Smithie fat woman in a circus sideshow died here Wednesday. Undertakers had to build a special casket to ship her to relatives in Indianapolis. The Little Rock firm produced a 39 inch wide 20 inch deep six foot three inch long casket using 50 feet of strap and iron fittings.
Dr. Robert A. Millikan of Caltech told the New York business chamber that the world has existed for over a billion years and humans may occupy it for another billion. He said mankind is a baby in his present form, having conducted business for only 20 000 to 50 000 years.
Judge Frank G. Wagaman grants Myrtle Kughn an absolute divorce from John Kughn on grounds of unfaithfulness. The couple married in 1926 and separated in 1927. Attorney Harper Ballentine appeared for the plaintiff.
United States Attorney Tuttle said Chief Officer Frank Johnson of the steamer Vestris checked out of a New York hotel after rescue. Attempts to locate him have failed. Lamport and Holt crew members, including Johnson, testified at the inquiry. Tuttle subpoenaed wireless message records and Radio Corp files to check for messages between Captain Carey and Sanderson and Son or local agents. A Sanderson vice president said none were received Monday.
