The Ben Thomas Jefferson nickel debuted this morning with 11 million coins going on sale at national banks. The coin features Thomas Jefferson and Monticello, making him the third person on a regular U S coin after Washington and Lincoln.
An accident yesterday afternoon injured Gibson Trenary, 52, a security worker at North American Cement, who was hospitalized in Washington County. Also admitted was Annabele Bowman, five, daughter of Wilbur Bowman of Smithsburg Route 2, with a fractured femur.

Oklahoma City November 15 Members of the Southern Medical Association approved the general principles of the national health program to be presented at Congress. The association will not formally endorse or condemn. The plan calls for up to 850 million dollars by 1948 to improve medical status. Physicians favored government funded care for the poor, more hospitals and clinics, and better care for mothers and children, while opposing compulsory health insurance until worked out by medical men. A federal physician urged active participation before Congress. Some pressure groups may push for insurance first, he warned. The program is seen as a development of the belief that health is a government concern.
In Eureka Illinois on November 15 the town of about 1500 celebrated pumpkin pie day. The community dinner featured a large pumpkin pie supply from a harvest of 12 000 tons of pumpkins, underscoring the town’s claim to the pumpkin center title.
Walter S. Fishel superintendent of Boonsboro Water Company explains recent water shortages due to cleaning of high pressure reservoir and two simultaneous leaks. He notes restoration within 48 hours and Fire protection storage sufficient for fires after repairs. He discusses pressure sources and five hour storage adequacy with Health Department officials.
The plant built in 1898 now requires safeguards unforeseen at the time. The company agreed to implement changes in production units and has begun work to ensure a safe water supply for Boonsboro.
The State Board of Health will require standards regardless of plant ownership. The company emphasizes that all water entering distribution reservoirs is chlorinated. Water is mainly from spring sources approved by the Health Department, with mountain streams used only in dry seasons as an auxiliary source.
One Daniel Boone to patrol the mountains near Clearspring is sought after Donald Hencer and his son Bernard reported spotting a large black bear about two miles north of the town near the old Draper distillery Saturday night. They estimated the bear weighed around 300 pounds and headed toward the Potomac River, with residents believing hunters drove the animal from the Pennsylvania mountains.
Leon Terry of South Mountain Pennsylvania, 39, driver of the auto in a Sunday evening crash in the 1100 block Potomac avenue, was fined $10 and costs on reckless driving and operating without a license. The car struck a parked auto, skidded onto John Powles lawn, and uprooted a tree. Two other occupants were fined $5 each for drunkenness.
