A House tax subcommittee tentatively exempted all corporations with net income $5,000 or less from the undistributed profits tax. The move would affect about two thirds of firms and may cause a $7 million annual revenue loss. More relief provisions were discussed, including loss carryovers and a higher net income bracket.
Dr James I Seder once missionary and ex chief of West Virginia Anti Saloon League slept in a Huntington hospital after release from kidnappers who held him 11 days. John Travis and Arentt A Booth two former convicts are in custody on kidnapping ties. Seder died this morning from pneumonia attributed to exposure.
A Milwaukee Road football special carrying Beloit college students derailed after colliding with a stalled car in Marion Grove Illinois. Fireman Henry G. Timmer died later. Engineer Edward Dickel escaped unharmed. The accident injured several students who were en route home from a University of Chicago game.
Generally fair and colder tonight with light rain or snow flurries in extreme west portion. Tuesday cloudy and colder with rain in the east and snow or rain in the west beginning Tuesday afternoon or night. Chesapeake Bay area colder with partly cloudy tonight and cloudy Tuesday then rain developing Tuesday afternoon or night, northerly winds increasing to northeast or east.
The state will maintain Fort Frederick road from the National Highway to the restored French and Indian War fortress near Big Pool. Announcement was made today by Dr. H. E. Tabler, chairman of the State Roads Commission. Other county roads are expected to be taken over soon.
Tip prizes are divided with half the first prize going to a South Potomac Street resident who reported a fire and an accident and the other half to a Main Street resident known for frequent unusual tips about six orphaned rabbits fed from bottles. The second prize is shared by a Pope Avenue resident for tips on a local telegraph office burglary and an accompanying tip on an accomplice.
Dr James J Seder, 79, who was held 10 days in an abandoned coal mine in a $50,000 extortion plot, died of pneumonia amid exposure. Prosecutor Winters will seek murder indictments against three suspects, potentially seeking the death penalty.
C H Locher of Hancock donates 20 acres with Fort Tonoloway site to Maryland. A log fort replica will be built by the State Forestry Department on the historic location. A 150 foot right of way from the National Highway is donated, and a macadam road will be built by the State Roads Commission to the fort. Lt Stoddard commanded the fort around 1760.
U S Route 522 between Watfordstown and Hancock is closed for construction repairs. Light traffic is detoured via the National Pike and Timber Ridge road. Heavy traffic must use Huyetts and Mercersburg or Cumberland via Bedford.
Theft of 26 pieces of silverware valued at 25 dollars was reported from William H. Chase’s home in the 400 block of North Jonathan street. Chase provided a clue to police this morning. J. M. Burris of Marysville reported an operator’s and registration card and a carton of cigarettes stolen from his automobile parked near Mt. Lena yesterday.
Japanese forces threaten China's Hindenburg line with a westward push from Shanghai toward Soochow and Nanking as 700 bombs hit Soochow in hours of fighting. North China already sees pressure near Tsinan while Kunshan falls, fueling a mass civilian exodus toward Soochow.
Italy stood apart as delegates from 19 nations moved toward a China Japan conflict draft. Italian envoy Count Aldovrandi-Mareschi was to relay Mussolini's stance that Fascist Italy could not join the US Britain and France in declaring Japan's action in China illegal. Italy faced abstain vote or outright rejection or request Rome talks.
Mrs A O Norris dropped Christmas money from her second floor window in Brooklyn Maryland. Edward Hofler a 10 year old boy found the money and turned it to police. The incident ensures a merry Christmas for Mrs Norris with Edward first on her shopping list.
Robert Yeagle and Jack Knott, two Baltimore youths who confessed to robbing Bentz & Mundey's jewelry store show window, were indicted on larceny charges by the November Grand Jury. Both are jailed. Sheriff’s report also lists Lester Brown indicted for assault and battery and Harry Baker for possession of liquor without a license. Jury examined witnesses. adjournment may run into tomorrow. No indictments on gambling yet.
Funkstown Fire Company answered a morning telephone report of fire near Bay town but area units found no fire on arrival. No injuries or property damage reported. investigators to check for false alarm or misheard address.
Fifteen survivors from the sinking of the Greek freighter Tzenny Chandris arrived in Norfolk aboard the coastguard cutter Mendota. They described mates clinging to wreckage as sharks nipped ankles and a seaman on a raft went mad and bit his captain before dying. Captain George Coufopandelis and 14 others were treated for exposure. rescue was hampered by heavy swells and darkness.
West Virginia approves Hancock bridge plans and bids will be advertised by end of November. Construction funding shares: federal 50 percent, WV 25 percent, Maryland 25 percent. Hancock bridge length 2262 feet, height 68 feet, cost about 900000, spanning Baltimore and Ohio and Western Maryland railroad tracks.
The 1937 hunting season began at daylight with bangs heard across the county. Hunters turned out in large numbers despite heavy rains. Reports say rabbits are plentiful while birds are scarce. Four local hunters near McCoy's Ferry bagged 16 cottontails in several hours.
The fall hunting season opened with a license shortage and landowner resistance. Of 2600 licenses issued, far fewer hunters were able to find permission to hunt. Hunters criticize the system for restricting access and enabling illegal hunting and trapping, which they say has reduced the game population.
Home Work Philadelphia reports Thomas Horan a housepainter of 25 years, fell while painting his own home yesterday in Philadelphia. He was taken to the hospital for treatment after the accident.
Baltimore on November 15 reports the Lexington seafood market a landmark for 125 years is being razed to provide additional motor car parking space.
President Roosevelt submitted a four point program to Congress urging removal of tax injustices to encourage productive enterprise. He called for early action on farm crop control labor wages hours and reorganization of the executive branch and planning of natural resources. He warned against tax revisions that raise overall burdens on the least able to bear them and urged lightening inequitable burdens on small business. He noted recession but said the economy can recover with prudent measures and private capital to create employment. He did not seek tax revision at the special session.
Washington reports the second session of the 15th Congress began without formal notices to members. Parliamentarian Lewis Deschler says members learn of sessions via the President’s proclamation or by word of mouth, a method criticized as inefficient by some. legends claim a dozen past openings saw members late due to travel costs.
Unemployed residents of Hagerstown may register for national unemployment and fill out forms at six local locations beginning tomorrow. City Tax Collector D. Lee Staley, chair of the Mayor’s committee with the post office, announced sites with posted hours 9–12, 1–4, and 7–9 Wednesday through Saturday.
J Donald Baker of Summit avenue and Wingert H Domer of North Locust street were injured with cuts and bruises to the face and body when their car crashed into a parked vehicle on Virginia avenue near the Prior Publishing Co plant. Baker, driving, said he lost control as the car struck a deep depression in the highway. The Baker car was nearly demolished.
Susie Powers six of Brunswick was seriously injured when run over by a car driven by Charles F. Pentz of Hagerstown. Pentz said the child darted from behind a parked car into the street. he stopped at once and helped.
Baltimore reports seven traffic deaths over the weekend, boosting the yearly toll to 49. This compares with 89 fatalities in the same period last year, highlighting a sharp drop in early 1940s road losses.
Chicago reports a month long drive by medical experts and federal agents to remove every traceable quantity of the sulfanilamide elixir from public reach after the drug caused 73 deaths.
Nathan L. Smith said the State Roads Commission will soon erect a two story brick laboratory building in Baltimore to test road construction materials. Bids will be received Wednesday for the project.
