Federal jury indicts pair in post office break-ins
Edwin M. Van Meter and Norman Garrett, both of Washington, indicted by a Federal Grand Jury in Baltimore on three counts for forcibly breaking into two Frederick County post offices on June 7. They allegedly robbed Horine and Pennell’s Jefferson store and Daniel Miller’s Knoxville store, with post offices inside. They are already serving 18 months in the House of Correction for similar Frederick County offenses. captured near Sharpsburg after a tip, then moved to Hagerstown and Frederick for trial.

Smith Named To Succeed Holden In Hagerstown PD
The Board of Street Commissioners accepted Fred Holden’s resignation from the Hagerstown police and named Nervin Smith as probationary officer to fill the vacancy. Holden leaves after nearly five years to return to the Norfolk and Western Railway fire department. Chief Peters reported 361 arrests and 835 dollars in fines in October, led by drunks and driving violations. eight of 26 larceny cases were cleared by arrests. A complaint cited two hour parking violations in the 100 block of South Potomac street by gavage employees and others.
