Los Angeles reports Col and Mrs James Roosevelt welcomed a son born yesterday weighing eight pounds twelve ounces. The child will be named James and is the first for the couple, who wed in 1941 after Romelle Schneider nursed Roosevelt in 1938. Two Men Remanded After Holdup arraignment
Daniel Linkins and Lloyd Stine waived preliminary hearings and were remanded to jail in default of $2000 bond each for November grand jury action. They are charged with attempting to hold up taxicab driver Ernest Riffee on Leitersburg pike after midnight Thursday. Police say both confessed. Riffee testified at arraignment that Linkins rode in the rear of his cab and Stine joined later.

Hagerstown merchants will stay open until 9 p m the seven days before Christmas and close at 6 p m Christmas Eve. A. Harry Warne, chairman of the Retailers Bureau, says supplies should be better than last year and shoppers gain 28 extra hours beginning Saturday, December 22. All stores will close Monday and Tuesday, December 31 and January 1 for a three day holiday for clerks.

Austin Mater, a Harpers Ferry fisherman, aimed for bass in the Potomac this week but hooked a wild duck. He cast his bait and, distracted, watched the duck dive. The reel whirled as the duck fought beneath the surface, breaking Mater’s line after about 15 minutes before it escaped.

Falling Waters Man Found Dead in Self Inflicted Hanging
Leonard R. Emerson a well to do Falling Waters West Virginia resident was found dead in his bedroom yesterday afternoon a coroner ruled he died by his own hand. Emerson who daily collected mail from the train and brought it to the local post office did not answer at the usual knock leading Mrs Anthony Boarman to discover the body. He had knotted two towels to form a noose and hanged himself from the bed frame, leaving no note though friends say he had been morbid in recent weeks.

The Washington county corn crop this year is estimated at three times last year's yield and the largest in four or five years. D. A.
