Democratic gains marked a year after Nixon era turbulence as party wins in Philadelphia Minneapolis Louisville and New York City balanced by GOP setbacks in California Virginia and New Jersey. Democratic machine in Philadelphia lights up the ballot, electing its full slate including Emmett Fitzpatrick over Arlen Specter ally Specter winning 235,102 to 209,195. Voter turnout lagged, with about 48 percent of the one million registered voters casting ballots. The win boosts Fitzpatrick’s leverage against Mayor Frank Rizzo as Watergate looms over city and state races.
Nassau Bahamas AP reports fugitive financier Robert Vesco was arrested on a U S warrant at the Commonwealth Bank by Bahamas police. He faces extradition hearings next week in Nassau. Vesco, 37, is accused in a July 20 fraud indictment alleging falsified records to cover a $50,000 embezzlement from ICG and involvement in the IVOC fraud case with an SEC civil suit alleging $222 million milking from Investors Overseas Service and others.

Washington voters approve pay raise rollback for legislators. Ed Fitzpatrick defeats Arlen Specter for Philadelphia district attorney. Ralph Perk re-elected mayor of Cleveland over Mercedes Corner.
New York AP reports stocks opened lower then turned higher after Democratic victories on Tuesday. The Dow Jones 30 industrials rose to 916.47 with 468 gainers over 423 losers at 10:20 am, rebounding after a seven day decline. Analysts cite abroad strength and political expectations influencing economic policy.
