William Preston Lane Jr of Hagerstown becomes Maryland's first governor elected from the Western Maryland section in over 50 years. A soft spoken versatile figure, Lane is a businessman, banker, lawyer, publisher and former soldier. Born in 1892, he studied at Hagerstown and the University of Virginia, practiced law, served in the National Guard and World War I, and held state attorney general duties in the early 1930s. He gained a reputation for minority rights through intervention against an Eastern Shore lynching and later became Democratic National Committeeman in 1940.

Eviction Certificates and Penalties Issued in Western Maryland
The Hagerstown area Rent Control office issued 152 eviction certificates in October across Frederick, Washington and Allegany counties. A total of 17 landlords were fined $1117 for rent overcharges, with $978 refunded to tenants and $139 paid to the U S Treasury.
