Medley of 20 Resolutions Approved by Maryland Labor Delegates
Cumberland Maryland May 25. Hundreds of delegates at the 38th annual convention of the Maryland District of the American Federation of Labor voted on more than 20 resolutions approved by committees. President John Lochner declined to reveal the resolutions' contents beyond noting none involved John L Lewis or the United Mine Workers. Speakers included War Manpower official Arthur L Schonthal and ex congressman William A Schulte. AFL leaders pledged 100 percent support for Franklin D Roosevelt to hasten victory in the war. Credentials showed about 250 registered with 125 more expected. Delegates from the Washington area formed a large share. Robert Buxbaum presided. Colvin referenced John L Lewis’ UMW request but gave few specifics. Conciliations Service Director Dr John R Steelman sent a greeting praising cooperative labor-management relations. Joseph McCurdy of Baltimore urged opposition to the Smith Connally anti strike bill.
