Seminary backs militant Black demands at Union Theological
Integrated group of Union Theological Seminary students in New York held a day long sit in for 500 million dollars in reparations while more than 100 students at Marietta College Ohio entered a fourth day of hunger strike. About 100 seminarians moved out of the administration building after 23 hours as officials agreed to convene a board meeting to hear demands. The protest targets 100 thousand from the seminary and one million raised privately for reparations campaign against religious institutions. At City College of New York President Copeland pledged to reopen negotiations with black and Puerto Rican students seeking a separate Black studies school and larger enrollment of unitary group students. Police would remain if necessary. Other campuses saw protests including Lincoln University Missouri and Newton Theological Seminary. Boston campus students at UMass Amherst funded ads to urge restoration of education cuts in the 1970 budget. The ad included a note from a silent minority.
