Senate moves toward labor reform with prohibitions on closed shops and secondary boycotts, authorizing injunctions during national emergencies, and creating a federal mediation agency. It also imposes union financial reporting, makes unions liable for unfair practices, and requires voluntary consent for dues.
Senate and House proposals clash on labor rights and union conduct. The House outlaws industry wide bargaining, revamps the NLRB, bans certain union funds, and limits union political spending. The Senate preserves some NLRB powers but tightens rules on picketing and con- straints, while both sides bar recognition for Communist linked groups.
A long list of community gatherings dates from June through September in Washington County. Organizations and families such as First Brethren Church United Daughters of the Confederacy Trinity Lutheran St Pauls U B and various reunions and clubs schedule events at local parks and churches including picnics, Sunday schools, classes, and society meetings.
The Board of Street Commissioners approved completing the L at the Municipal Light Plant with two boilers and a 5040 kilowatt generator and ordered immediate installation. They endorsed alley cleanup by the Junior Chamber of Commerce and planned police-health enforcement follow ups. Officials discussed an underpass or raised tracks to ease West End access and Walnut Lane completion this summer.
Two smaller unions succeed in persuading some Bell employees to honor picket lines while 2300 Cincinnati Communications workers return to duty at Cincinnati and Suburban Bell. In Detroit Michigan Bell rejects a wage proposal for 13 000 strikers and traffic workers. Pacific coast workers ratify a contract with Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Company. Rain totals reach up to 200 inches yearly in the Amazon jungle.
The 500 Rotarians wrap up as Tom Roge of Birmingham and John Frizzell outline final luncheon plans at the Masonic Temple. Senator Clyde Hoey of North Carolina rebuts inflation fears and a looming war while FBI official Hugh Clegg warns of a crime army in 1947. Charles Zook of Lewistown is named District Governor Nominee pending national confirmation.
Senator Hoey warned about high prices easing only if people return to work and criticized labor racketeers while noting unions cover a small share of workers. FBI official Clegg urged civic groups to boost vigilance leadership and cut crime by personal responsibility and nonpoliticized law enforcement.
John J. Cooney, general organizer for the Brotherhood of locomotive Firemen and Enginemen, announced the union aims to organize locomotive operators firemen and engineers employed by the Western Maryland Railway. He said the group has an agreement with railroads for two operators on each diesel engine as a safety measure and a vote by Western Maryland men now under United Mine Workers District 50 will occur within a month. He explained the Crosser amendment to the Railroad Retirement Act which expands survivors benefits to widows and orphaned children of railroad workers.
In Hagerstown crowds at the Court House witnessed Paul Rusger Bradshaw, famed as a living escape artist. He displayed chains, straight jacket, and rope bondage while entertaining passersby with a witty, fearless performance. He recounted a dramatic career with Barnum and Bailey and feats from flagpole sitting to airborne escapes.
Russel Bradshaw will scale Frederick's tallest building this weekend to benefit the Cancer Drive. Chicago critic Lioyé Lewis hails him as a genius in chains and a triumph of showmanship and personality. Mississippi forests cover about 15 860 000 acres.
