Southern coal operators pull from union shop talks

Six members of the southern group of bituminous operators withdrew today from the Appalachian conference rather than sign the two year contract with the United Mine Workers including the union shop clause. Gunter said 45,000 dissenters and 45,000,000 tons produced yearly. Other conference members signed and mines to reopen Monday.

Two Fatally Burned In Auto Accident

Denton scene report details a 3 A. M. crash when a car veered off road and burst into flames. Driver James Willoughby Jr., 25, Nobbs Maryland, burned beyond recognition. Ora Bowdle, 63, Burrsville, died trapped beneath the overturned vehicle. Russell Messick, 21, Hickman Delaware, burned on his face while attempting rescue. Miss Helen Maloney and Alison Covey witnessed the incident returning from a dance.

Verdict: Unavoidable Accident in Dayhoff Death

A coroner's jury ruled the death of Benjamin F. Dayhoff, 62, an unavoidable accident after he stepped into the path of a car driven by Walter Sylcox of Buena Vista Avenue in Washington Square. Dayhoff died Thursday at Washington County Hospital after being struck Tuesday night. Clyde Daugherty led the jury. Justice Harry E. Snyder presided.

Smith Held For Action Of Court

Richard Smith, 20, held on $1000 bond for grand jury action after arraignment before Justice M V B Bostetter. He admitted entering the Merle Kaetzel home on East avenue and the Lloyd A Rouzee home on North Locust street, taking $32.

Three Arrested On Indictments

George W. Harper night watchman was taken into custody on an indictment charging assault with intent to carnally know. Frank Long for conducting a lottery and John W. C. Smith for incest were also arrested on indictments. Criminal court will open Thursday morning of next week.

CCC Officer Is Indicted For Liquor Sales

Lieut. Gilbert M. Payne in charge of the CCC camp near Boonsboro and John Bugay who runs the camp canteen were indicted by the May Grand Jury on charges of selling liquor. The indictments stem from a Grand Jury probe into alleged beer sales at the canteen. It is understood they will be represented by a U S District Attorney when their cases are called.

Autos Sideswipe Charges Against Two Drivers

The automobiles of Marion E. Fish of the 300 block of South Mulberry street and Herman I. Buhl of New Market Us. were sideswiped at the Air port at 10 15 o clock this morning. Both cars were damaged, no injuries. Deputy Leister Isanogle investigated and announced he preferred charges against both drivers for signaling failures and reckless driving.

Publisher Seized By Two Men In Garage

George Palmer Putnam 52, Hollywood publisher and Amelia Earhart husband, was kidnapped from his North Hollywood home and found bound and gagged in an incomplete Bakersfield house.
