Wave of Crime Surges in U S Says Secret Service Chief
Washington May 13. There was more crime in the United States during 1919 than in 1897 according to William H. Moran head of the U S Bureau of Secret Service. He cites upheaval after the war and prohibition as key factors driving a rise in bank robberies counterfeiters and forgers. Moran argues returning soldiers did not cause crime but urban exposure and postwar readjustment created temptations. He notes wage spikes in war industries and unemployment after armistice fueling reckless spending and crime, and says prohibition indirectly pushed ex-saloon patrons into other criminal venues. The bureau logged 779 arrests last year up from 510 prior, with counterfeit notes totaling $90,930.
