In Moscow the Soviet Union ordered the expulsion of U.S. diplomat Garnett Lee from the embassy on charges of anti Soviet actions among African students. The United States denied wrongdoing yet said he would depart by week’s end amid protests over alleged discrimination against African students.
Obituaries from Point of Rocks Maryland and Marlowe West Virginia list Alvie Edward Toms 77 of Point of Rocks a World War I veteran and longtime Baltimore and Ohio Railroad employee who died Sunday. Also Olive Smaltz 84 of Marlowe widow of Harry Smaltz died Sunday after a short illness en route to Hagerstown Hospital. British Prime Minister Harold Wilson opened NATO’s spring meeting urging interdependence over military nationalism. He did not name Charles de Gaulle but targeted France’s approach, stating only two major nuclear powers exist, the United States and the Soviet Union, and downplaying France and China. The address called for alliance cohesion aligned with world needs.
The House passed a health research bill totaling 408 million dollars by a 333 to 4 vote. It adds three assistant secretaries of welfare, raising current staff from two. The measure extends existing health research facilities programs for three years with 250 million dollars for matching grants.
The State Department warned Americans traveling to Cambodia that Washington cannot provide protection. Cambodia broke diplomatic relations with the United States last week. Kathleen Dorn, 19, blind since birth from Albany, NY, has been accepted as a postulant with the Sisters of Mercy in Portland, Maine. She will start studies to become a nun in September with help from employer John W. Hacker and Miss Joan Fills, who proofreads her work. Dorn is believed to be the first blind person accepted for training as a nun.
