Purchase Of Plant Approved For Harpers Ferry Lighting
Townspeople of Harpers Ferry will gain lighting after dark through a purchase by the Potomac Light and Power Co. The old Federal arsenal on the property, established by George Washington in 1796, remains part of the dam system powering the present hydroelectric plant. The historic arsenal buildings, tied to John Brown’s 1859 raid and Civil War events, were later destroyed and replaced by the current plant built by Harpers Ferry Paper Co.
