Allied bombers off northern Australia sank or damaged two Japanese submarines in a sequel to the Coral Sea battle. Over the past seven days Japanese vessels officially reported knocked out or crippled rose to 21, with observers noting possible undercounting of transports and the first mention of submarines in the communique.
Dr. W. R. Willard announced that seven county communities Hancock Funkstown Clearspring Smithsburg Williamsport Boonsboro and Sharpsburg have purchased first aid equipment for the Emergency Medical Service setup. The Medical Service also received substantial gifts from the Lions Club Zonta Club Rotary Club BPW Club and the Washington County Nurses' Alumnae Association to place kits in casualty stations.
The State Roads Commission announced immediate resumption of surface treatment on selected roads after a federal tar freeze. One-third of the frozen tar stock is released for surfacing, with half of that for patch work, enabling the spring program to proceed.

George M Shriver 74 senior vice president of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad died suddenly at Union Memorial hospital after injuries from a home fall on April 7. He had worked 55 years with B and O and led financial affairs since 1940, renowned for his railroad finance expertise and involvement in a major refinancing plan.
The Hagerstown Retailers Association and local Chamber unit are distributing the general maximum price regulations to members and merchants. The association has also applied to the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond Virginia for copies of its bulletin on consumers credit. The bulletin covers installment buying and charge accounts.

Berlin radio quoted the Japanese press saying Allied naval forces in the Coral Sea were exceptionally strong and by far the most powerful fleet units the Japanese navy has yet encountered.

Washington May 11 plans to compel every American wage earner to invest part of his weekly pay in the war effort were proposed in both houses. Senators and representatives urged a withholding tax of 5 to 10 percent or a scale deducting a portion of wages to buy war bonds, with different rates by wage class and family status. The Gore bill would apply to wages from 20 to 60 dollars weekly, with higher brackets and limits, and an annual income cap of 25 thousand dollars.
Brigadier General Francis Petrott topics a Sunday after noon muster on May 17 for six Minute Men companies formed in Hagerstown and Washington County. Volunteers trained to guard utilities in emergencies, modeled on English hunter units. About 250 will assemble at 1 30 p m at the State Armory in Hagerstown, with Williamsport and vicinity company at 2 30 p m at Williamsport High School auditorium, about 75 strong. Smithsburg Cavetown Chewsville and Edgemont group about 80 to meet Smithsburg High School at 4 p m.

Cecil Baker of Finzel Md landed what is believed to be the region’s largest trout of the year in Piney Dam near Cumberland. The brown trout measured 22-1/2 inches long and weighed five and three quarter pounds.
Observers in London report Britain has prepared a massive gas offensive as a swift response if Germany uses gas in Russia. Churchill cited preparations as a lethal deterrent, with new gases and techniques developed and reserves built up. The plan includes bomber and gas integration, delivering liquid gas from air to ground.
Government weather observer J A Miller at Kee dsville recorded a light frost with the low at 35 degrees and three degrees from freezing. Howard Ramsburg of Kee dsville noted frosted lawn. Miller said today’s low was seven degrees above the county May minimum, recalling a 28 degree low on May 12, 1913 that killed much fruit in the lowlands.
Maryland civilian defense groups would come under Maj. Gen. Milton A. Reckord, Third Corps area commander, in emergencies from enemy air attacks. Governor O Conor announced the plan, citing Lieut. Gen. Hugh A. Drum of the First Army as the source.
Paris radio reports German air force attacked Hastings and Bexhill on Sunday with high explosives and incendiaries. British security ministries said some damage and a small number of casualties occurred, some fatally, at two southeast coast points.
New York May 11 Morris Waimowitz a pretzel seller rationed his cigarettes. He stuck the butt in his pocket and lost his trousers in a fire. He was hospitalized for leg burns.
Representative Cole of Maryland was nominated by President Roosevelt to serve as a judge on the United States customs court. The move, presented as a birthday gift, comes as Cole turns 53.
Paris radio broadcast reported by Reuters says British forces in Madagascar have reached a standstill and are awaiting reinforcements. The advisory comes as Allied operations continue in the region amid World War II tensions.
In Chungking on May 11 the Chinese said they repelled a Japanese push in western Shantung and southern Hopeh. They reported seven days of fighting that intensified on May 3 with air, cavalry and tanks, and said the enemy sent 40 truckloads of bodies back from the Hopeh border along with cremations.
In Valetta amid bombs and machine gun fire Lord Gort was sworn governor and commander in chief of Malta yesterday. An official report tallies 41 enemy aircraft destroyed or damaged across the day and night. The ceremony occurred in a bomb damaged building as a chief justice bled from a nearby blast.
The Navy announced the sinking of a medium sized British merchant vessel by a torpedo off the Atlantic coast. Survivors were landed at an east coast port.
Omar E Dorsay eight from Sharpsburg broke his right leg in a fall yesterday. He was admitted to Washington County Hospital for treatment.
The county will begin gasoline rationing card registration tomorrow and run through Thursday. Superintendent Benjamin C. Willis expects 17 000 to 20 000 motor vehicle owners to register with 4 6 pm hours tomorrow and the same on Wednesday, and 2 30 to 3 pm on Thursday. Teachers will act as registrars at all city and county centers except Surrey and Broadway. Bring registration card and be prepared to state car use and miles traveled. Card A allows seven units of gasoline.
Heavy fighting persisted near Chefang as Japanese reinforcements arrived to replace two wiped out columns. Chinese dispatches claim over 4,500 Japanese killed in Burma operation, with 3,000 more dead in a counterattack on their main invasion force, leaving remnants in flight and facing annihilation.
General Archibald P. Wavell reshaped three Indian military commands into fighting armies to meet Japanese advances in Burma and Rangoon’s invasion fleet. The northern northeastern and southern commands become northwestern eastern and southern armies as the most threatened areas receive the bulk of forces.
R V Dutrow of 1146 Corbett Street said he pulled from Antietam Creek above Breathedsville what he believes is the largest snapping turtle, about 22 pounds, after thinking a log had snagged his night crawler. The fight lasted 15 minutes before the big snapper was landed. He also pulled a 5 pound carp from the same hole.
