Ex-bookie claims names of higher ups in graft case
In New York on May 9 ex-bookie Barry Gross testified in a departmental trial of five policemen accused of taking graft. He said he supplied names of higher ups to the district attorney and suggested some may have received kickbacks. Gross, jailed for bookmaking and conspiracy, said he testified to clear his name and restore his family’s welfare. He also accused the district attorney of offering consideration for cooperation. The five officers facing retirement and pension questions are Capt. George M. West Capt. Eugene McGillicuddy Lt. Thomas J. Evans Sgt. Walter P. Sullivan and Patrolman John B. MeNamara.

Newport Beach Calif May 9 Glenn L Martin marks the 40th anniversary of his over water flight but cancels the retrace mission. He originally flew from Cherae to Santa Catalina Island on May 10 1912 in a single seat craft and planned a Navy Mars scale retrace with pontoons. The plan was dropped due to reduced aviation fuel as oil strikes affected fuel supply. Martin will return to Baltimore headquarters.
