Prague faced heavy bombardment as Soviet and Allied forces moved to secure the Czech capital. German troops reportedly capitulated elsewhere, while Prague burned and streets were looted amid the final days of World War II in Europe.
SHAEF notified AP London managing editor Robert Bunnelie that he was suspended as a war correspondent in the European theater. Public relations officer Harry Clark in London relayed SHAEF Paris instructions, citing no stated reason for the move.
Clark said he would forward the request to Paris as part of SHAEF probe into Germany surrender coverage. The suspension bars Bunnelle from Army controlled communications and facilities granted to correspondents amid the investigation led by Edward Kennedy, Paris AP bureau chief.
More than 1300 people packed St John’s Lutheran Church auditorium for a memorial and prayer service sponsored by the Hagerstown Retailers’ Bureau with St Mary’s Catholic Church Binai Abraham Synagogue and the Washington County Council of Churches. American pilots report the Japanese air force failing to intercept raids on Nipponese airfields and transport routes to Indo China. Japanese ground forces counterattack in the southern Philippines and suffer losses as US lines hold on Okinawa. Tokyo claims the war is unaffected by Europe’s end.
Nimitz cautions against expecting a quick end to the war with Japan as Allied command staff describe the foe as a tough, well armed, resolute enemy. A Chinese spokesman dismisses peace rumors while Japanese munitions officials push for rapid production of defensive planes. Japanese attacks on the U S Fleet halt after a week, sinking 26 small ships. U S forces claim air support actions in China.
The Allied leaders Zhukov Tedder Spaatz Vishinsky Burroughs de Tassigny presided as German plenipotentiaries signed the act of unconditional surrender at 12 10 after Zhukov asked for the document. Keitel handed the signed capitulation as cameras rolled and observers noted the formal conclusion of Nazi Germany’s war.
