Gasoline Tax Favored to Fund Grade Crossing Elimination
Baltimore May. An increase of one cent in the gasoline tax is favored by John N. Mackall chairman of the State Roads Commission to produce the state's share of funds for eliminating grade crossings on Maryland highways. The plan envisions an equal division of the estimated $20,000,000 cost between the State and the railroads with the extra cent yielding about $1,000,000 a year and about $4 per car. The state would raise its half over ten years, and even with the tax the cost to motorists would remain lower than in Virginia West Virginia Pennsylvania Delaware and North Carolina.
