Probe Opens in Nationwide Alcohol Ring Inquiry
In Baltimore on May 6 the grand jury heard 18 witnesses as federal agents aided the probe into a national alcohol ring stretching from New York to Kansas. District Attorney Simon E. Sobeloff reported that about 125 indictments are expected after a yearlong inquiry that began with seizures of three cracking plants and stills totaling 18 006 gallons.

Measles Tops Disease List in April County Report
Health Officer W. Ross Cameron reported 92 measles cases in Washington County during April and noted two acute epidemic meningitis deaths. Other April totals included 7 chicken pox, 8 gonorrhea, 4 influenza, 1 pneumonia, 8 scarlet fever, 43 syphilis, 16 teberculosis, 12 whooping cough, 14 mumps, 2 erysipelas, 3 meningitis. Public health actions included tests for immunity at several schools and advises to avoid large gatherings during outbreaks.

York County Forest Fire Burns 2009 Acres in Two Counties
A large forest fire near the Mt. OH vet camp meeting grounds in northern York County burned about 2,009 acres of timber in York and Cumberland Counties. Fire crews from Dillsburg and surrounding towns, led by Chief Fire Warden Bittinger at Caledonia, worked to prevent flare ups with thirty men still on the line.

Girl Shot While Riding in Car Near Jackson
Miss Tessie Patton an 18 year old student at Lee's Junior College was fatally wounded when a group of men stepped from the roadside and opened fire on the automobile she rode in. Driver George Daniels Jr 40 mph pursued the assailants as a second occupant Thomas Meadows escaped uninjured. The car occupants rushed to a Jackson area hospital where Patton died a short time later. A 200 strong posse led by Sheriff J E Combs of Breathitt County and the local police chief pursued the attackers.
