British sea borne forces land at Courier bay near Diego Suarez and push toward the Madagascar naval base as fighting endures. Petain and Darlan urge defense of the French flag while the nature of British success remains unclear and Japanese forces near.
The Health Department reports strong mother participation in Hagerstown and county pre-school clinics. At Lincoln school yesterday twenty three mothers attended with twenty three children entering school in the fall. About 220 children received physical examinations at clinics, with mothers accompanying most youngsters. Remaining clinics run today in Downsville, Thursday in Hancock, and Friday on Washington Street.
Nearly 1000 rounds of ammunition and a tool box were found in a field near Salisbury Maryland, believed dropped from a plane to lighten its load. The find was made by May Burris who notified Mrs. R J Chatham, and authorities collected the bullets and tools for examination.
British commandos led a force to seize Madagascar's Diego Suarez base in Vichy France controlled territory. General R G Struges, Royal Marines, previously fought at Gallipoli. The action aimed to forestall a Japanese move and bolster Allied control of the Indian Ocean.
The Board of Education meets in regu lar session this afternoon to elect officers for the year. Charles I. Wolfinger, recently appointed by the governor to fill a vacancy, takes seat as a member. Routine business precedes discussion of a summer program of repairs and improvements. Defense training at high schools will continue this summer as practiced last year.
Salvage for Victory proceeds in Hagerstown will go to the American Red Cross war relief fund. W. Paul Settles, chair of the cleanup committee, said the Junior Chamber of Commerce sponsors the drive. Householders should separate salvage from other material for easier city truck collection. ashes should not be included.

Consumption in Hagerstown reached a record 6,500,000 gallons yesterday, announced by Albert Heard, superintendent of the Water Department. A year earlier daily use was about 1,000,000 gallons less. Two reservoirs at Edgemont and Smithsburg remain nearly full despite April drought, aided by March snowmelt feeding springs and underground streams. About 3,500,000 gallons daily flow from the two reservoirs.
The Navy Department released its casualty list up to April 30 detailing five officers and 17 enlisted men from Maryland and their next of kin. The compilation notes that no Paris county or Washington county men are listed.
In Cumberland Maryland on May 5 the Baker embezzlement trial concluded before noon. Walter Baker a Hagerstown attorney faced closure as state and defense prepared summations for afternoon proceedings. Leo Weinberg claimed Baker could pay any amount set by the Orphans Court though restitution was not a defense.
Planes unidentified by any announced affiliation flew over Vichy and Clermont-Ferrand in occupied France early today, dropping observation flares and propaganda leaflets while anti-aircraft fire and airplane noise aroused residents. No explosives were reported dropped.
Plucky 12 year old Ann Lindberg alone at home heard a prowler. She grabbed a flashlight and shone it into the window catching the intruder in the beam. She warned him to leave and call the police, prompting the prowler to flee.
A medium sized United Nations merchant vessel and a British merchantman were torpedoed off the Atlantic coast. Surviving crew were landed at an East Coast port. Navy officials announced the incident today.
Deputy Warden H. M. Garrison called for volunteers to man airplane spotter stations across the county. With a shortage of spotters reported, volunteers are urged to report to Civilian Defense headquarters on the second floor of City Hall.
London May 5 A group of Adolf Hitler's generals led by Field Marshal Walther von Brauchitsch reportedly told the Fuehrer that if the 1942 campaign in Russia fails they will pursue an alternate plan to abolish the Nazi system. A source noted Hitler accepted the challenge calmly and reappointed von Brauchitsch to the supreme command. The source offered two readings of the incident: confidence seeking support or recognition of weakness and a push for compromise.
Long range RAF bombers attacked Stuttgart and the Skoda armament works at Pilsen in Nazi occupied Czecho Slovakia, and Nantes docks in a forceful night raid. Three planes were reported lost in the missions, with a 1,400 mile round trip by Stirling four engined bombers. The Air Ministry released the communique detailing the operations and previous visit to Skoda on November 20.
Certificates for new automobiles have been granted by the local Ration Board to fifteen persons and firms. Recipients include Freeman W. Kiehl Ivan C. Reed Hyman Serbin Potomac Edison Company John B. The record of eight damage suits moved from Allegany county to Washington county for trial. Plaintiffs seek damages from 2500 to 25000. George E. Malamphy seeks 25000 for his son Lawrence Malamphy who died after a school bus door injury on November 12, 1941. Defendants include Guy Stonestreet William A. Moore and the Allegany County Board of Education. Additional suits involve Annie A. Dilley claiming 10090 for her husband Bernard Dilley’s death after a chocolate éclair from Federal Bake Shops Inc Frances M Deffenbaugh seeks 1000 from Fred W Jenkins Aster Cab Co for heart ailment linked to an auto accident.
U S bombers under Major Gen. Lewis Brereton attacked Mingaladon airfield north of Rangoon amid heavy storms. The raid reported 70 enemy planes, eight fighters observed, and fires and explosions from 250 and 500 pound bombs on hangars and aircraft. Lieut Willard A Fountain, 25, of Florida is named in the report.
The local Red Cross head quarters announce that information about men in the Philippines is available now and inquiries are being held on the West Coast until details can be obtained. Postal cards with name address phone and family physician are filed to aid locating families in emergencies. Miss Gertrude Skiles notes location of men elsewhere is being set up though some cases take time.
Stamp No 1 on the sugar ration book is valid for one pound of sugar if purchased between May 5 and May 16. Stamp No 2 covers May 17 to May 30, with future two week periods, and new booklets issued when exhausted. Superintendent B C Willis notes stamps void if unused and urges continued school registrations to reduce congestion.
The Maryland and District of Columbia Hospital Association will hold its spring meeting in Hagerstown with 60 to 70 hospital superintendents and trustees attending. Luncheon at 12:30 p.m. at Hotel Alexander, business sessions in the hotel ballroom. Harvey Weiss will preside. A Blue Cross film and papers on hospital administration will be presented. War impact on hospitals and defense preparations are key topics.
Voters in Alabama Florida Indiana and South Dakota pick candidates in four-state primaries with limited international issues and little domestic dispute. The AP notes waning political interest due to wartime concerns. Illinois last month marked the first wartime primary. In these four states 28 House seats and two Senate seats are on the line. Senator Bankhead of Alabama has no opposition.
Japanese troops push into China's Yunnan province driving up the Burma road and crossing the Wan ting river near Wanting. Bitter fighting reported around Wanting as Tokyo says air raids hit Yungchang and that nine planes were destroyed. The Burma front has moved about 500 miles from Rangoon in two months.
A recent order from Joseph B. East man Office of Civilian Transportation prohibits chartering buses for pleasure trips due to curtailment of rubber and gasoline. Unacceptable charters include civilian parties to beaches resorts picnics race tracks and sports events. Blue Ridge Transportation Company says it is complying with the ruling.
A weekend lightning strike at Rhodes Grove camp meeting grounds near Kauffman’s Station Franklin County destroyed one cottage owned by Bishop Ezra M Funk of Huntington Indiana and damaged three others including properties of King Street United Brethren church Chambersburg and Mrs Sarah B Kuhn of Chambersburg. Rain hail and wind caused additional damage with a cow killed near Mercersburg and fruit trees uprooted.
