Seizure Power Questioned in Ward Case Against FDR
In Chicago on May 2, Attorney General Biddle defended President Roosevelt’s wartime authority to seize private properties as a war measure. Montgomery Ward fought the seizure of its Chicago mail order plant, contending the action exceeded statutory powers and violated the War Labor Disputes Act. The dispute centers on whether non-war activities fall under federal control.
