New Pension Law Passes in House With One Dissent
Washington May 2 The House backed a bill to extend and start pensions for nearly 90 000 World War veterans 60 000 widows orphans and dependent parents with only one vote against it Representative Costello of California the sole dissenter. If Senate and President approve 18 751 000 will be paid out in the first year and costs may rise as eligibility expands. The plan raises or starts pensions for widows orphans and parents of disabled veterans and adds a minimum 100 monthly for several hundred veterans including those from earlier wars. The vote was 359 to 1.

Life Terms Given On Kidnap Charge
Yuba City May 2 Robert and Ollen Grimes Louisville Ky brothers convicted of kidnaping Mrs Norma Meeks 55 last Sept 1 were sentenced today to Folsom Prison for life. Defense attorneys filed notice of appeal. The brothers arrested in Louisville January 30 denied they were in California the night of Sept 1 when Mrs Meeks was abducted from her Rio Oso home and her husband William R Meeks fruit rancher was bound and ordered to pay 15000 for her release. She escaped from her captors hideout three days later. The ransom was not paid.

Real Estate Board backs Maryland permanent re assessment bill
The Hagerstown Real Estate Board endorsed the Washington county permanent re assessment bill awaiting Governor O Conor signature. Yesterday, pinball machines disappeared citywide as an emergency act expired leaving them unlawful. Operators, who often shared takings with premises, reportedly moved many machines to other states where legal. About 10,000 machines existed statewide, valued from 100 to 500 dollars and taxed 35 dollars under the old law.
Nine Injured In Waynesboro Highway Crash
Nine persons were injured two seriously when a trans continental Greyhound bus collided with a lumber truck and crashed into an embankment at Waynecastle. Chinese Aviatrix Injured In Crash
Hilda Yen, 25 year old niece of former Chinese ambassador W W Yen and famed as China’s Amelia Earhart, was severely injured when her monoplane Spirit of New China crashed near Montgomery during takeoff. She regained consciousness and said she would gladly die for the cause while hospitalized. Yen was en route from Mobile to Birmingham on a tour for Chinese war refugees.
