In a firsthand installment, Capt. Jeremiah A. Denton details brutal torture during captivity, the struggle to resist giving up information, and the prisoner network at the Hanoi area camp. He recalls specific abuses, biographical pressure, and acts of sibling defiance amid deteriorating conditions.
Troops from Vietnam arrive at Travis and San Francisco International Airport to subdued receptions and TV coverage. Many speak of civilians’ return and wives joining later. the last flight features a red carpet welcome for a POW officer. Additional planes bring 58 more veterans as POWs and officials travel home.
At Lark Air Base in the Philippines the last American POW captured in the Vietnam War along with three others left for home. The group, among whom were previously missing for up to five years, were freed by the Viet Cong in Hanoi. The first C-141 carried 18 POWs to Kelly Field Illinois travis to follow later. The flight plans included stops in Hawaii and final landings near home for medical checks. Kientzler of Poway California, shot down near the DMZ on January 27, thanked senior officers aboard along with Col Purcell of Columbus Georgia.
The Weather Elsewhere crowd at Clark received POWs with compliments to locals, praising American spirit and care. Officials say 49 more American POWs and a Canadian missionary will depart on three flights to bases in Seattle, Andrews, Kelly, and Sheppard, with 67 more expected to leave by Monday.

Communist forces widened their siege on Tongle Chan ranger base about 50 miles north of Saigon firing over 1,300 shells and conducting a ground assault. One government soldier was killed and 25 wounded as the base remains under siege since February 26.
A State Supreme Court jury found Black militant leader Rap Brown and three codefendants guilty of robbery and assault in a West Side Manhattan bar raid. Brown, 29, faces up to 25 years for robbery and 15 years for the assault, with sentencing scheduled. Jury deliberations stretched three days, and Brown’s attorney condemned the verdict as a miscarriage of justice.
