William F. Cody earned the nickname Buffalo Bill after a contract supplying buffalo meat to construction crews building the Asian Pacific Railroad.
A 25 member committee from the five city fire companies will meet in City Hall to elect a new Fire Chief before April first. Current Chief Max Hoover is expected to seek reappointment despite no other candidates being named yet. The chosen chief, a nonpaid post with a small expense allowance, will need mayoral and council confirmation. Poisonous snakes may strike from almost any position.
Former ambassador Bullitt urged keeping A bombs ready as hearings consider outlawing the Communist party. Senator Pepper criticized the diplomatic approach and argued for public input on U.S. strategy in Greece and Soviet influence. A starch from sweet potatoes now yields a new catue feed byproduct.

Events include parades songs skits talents grooming and club spirit demonstrations with prizes for top in three classes. Downey Harshman and Thelma Hockenberry lead the parade. A James Condaris directs the Hagerstown High School orchestra.

A Jonathan street restaurant reportedly had an unlocked door missed by night shift and found by day shift officers. Officials urge routine checks and prompt reporting to HQ to deter burglaries.

City officials may convert Washington street to one way east and Franklin street to one way west when the dual highway opens later this year. City Engineer Charles W. Stump told the Board of Street Commissioners he discussed plans with a State Roads traffic officer but did not commit the city. The officer indicated officials then in office had agreed to the changes.
A strong 60 mile per hour wind storm in Tennessee caused two fatalities, widespread building damage, and thousands of telephones and power lines to fail. The same report notes a separate line about the importation of mongooses into the United States being prohibited by law.
Senior Counselor Parley T. Outright of the Martinsburg UTC Council announced a annual gathering here next Saturday. UTC councils from Hagerstown Baltimore Cumberland Winchester Harrisonburg invited to attend.
