Chinese headquarters in Burma reported a 1000 Japanese troops captured an airdrome north of Toungoo, with a heavy battle under way. Japanese forces cut the Toungoo to Mandalay road in civilian dress, then were driven out. Chinese hold their outpost line as British say the patrol situation will be cleared today.
C Vernon Stone Jr was named president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce at a Monday directors meeting. He succeeds Odelle Leiter as president. Elected officers include John Colton first vice president Paul Ridenour second vice president and John Corderman treasurer. The group plans its annual dinner dance on Thursday April 23 at the Hotel Alexander.
William R. Lowman, a Mercersburg born seaman, spotted six men on a raft three miles away and led their rescue. He is on a six day leave in Hagerstown after enlisting through the local office in December. Lowman says he could see better with his naked eye than with binoculars that night while on duty in the crow's nest amid heavy mist and spray. He carries a photo of Admiral Adolphus Andrews congratulating him.
Reports from Canberra say Dutch resistance continues in Central Borneo Central Sumatra and parts of Celebes. Dutch forces are said to have pushed Japanese back at several locations amid ongoing campaign in the Indies.
Squadron Leader John Newkirk of the American Volunteer Group was killed during a dawn raid on the Chiangmai airfield in Burma. He had shot down more than 20 Japanese planes and earned the Distinguished Service Order from Britain earlier this month. Brig. Gen. Claire Chennault praised him as unmatched.

Gilbert J. Eberline a 19 year old driver of 827 Virginia Avenue was injured when his car left the road near Falling Waters yesterday afternoon and crashed into a tree after he dozed off. He was found unconscious in the wreckage and taken to Washington County Hospital where his condition today is described as satisfactory.
Washington reports the War Production Board orders curbs on safety razors straight razors and razor blades to 70 percent of 1940 monthly averages for 90 days. Electric razors are excluded but may face future action up to WPB notice. The limit applies to safety razors at 70 percent and to straight razors and blades at their 1940 monthly averages.

Captain E V Peters of New York went down with the ship while 36 crewmen escaped in four lifeboats. eight in two boats were saved after nine hours adrift by a rescue ship and landed at Norfolk. another ship rescued 29 others and took them ashore at Southport, N C, per the Fifth Naval District.

London March 25 The consensus of military opinion is that Japan may launch an invasion of Siberia and Vladivostok as spring battles begin in 1942. Vladivostok, a major U S S R port, would allow bombers to reach Tokyo and Nagasaki and serve as a base for attacks on Alaska.
