The State debates enforcement of a new 1 percent gas tax amid constitutional questions and potential court action. Opponents call the measure too complex to enforce, while supporters push for road funding and a possible referendum campaign.
Commissioner E Austin Baughman of Motor Vehicles said the gas tax funding for lateral roads lacks sufficient appropriations to run the program. At a Thursday conference with Deputy Commissioner D Marshall Schroeder and State Police Captain Charles Meyers, four new staff positions were proposed: a secretary, filling clerk, applications clerk for rebates, and an inspector. Baughman planned to seek these items in a supplemental budget from Governor Huey at Annapolis.
Fruit growers in Hagerstown vote to construct a central packing house to sort and pack all regional fruit. The plan eliminates individual labor costs and enables wholesale selling of apples and culls. The decision follows talks by Dr. Borberger and Mr. Prettyman and names a planning committee including Dr. Sottanogie Wishard Wagner Reader and Moore.

Platt leaves Tomatay for Winston Salem to preach. Mrs Shaffer to preach at Trinity Lutheran in Ma. Gem Theatre hosting church services March 20 at 10:30 and 7:30. Sunday school at 9:30.
