Billion Paid On Final Day In New York Tax District

The 2nd Federal Tax District collected an estimated 1.000,227,000 in a single day, the largest one day tax haul ever for the district. Manhattan south of 34th Street Staten Island Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands comprise the area. Officials say the total is about 25 percent higher than last year, due partly to a new rule requiring corporations to pay 45 percent of annual income as the first quarterly installment. A single unidentified corporation reportedly paid 11 trillion dollars, the largest single payment on record in New York.

Dock Workers Slow To Accept Army Jobs

The army began hiring civil service longshoremen to load transports at strike-bound bases but response was slow. At Brooklyn only 65 of 400 needed were processed. none hired at Staten Island or Jersey City. About 500 demonstrators gathered at Brooklyn entrance. police ended the brief protest without violence.
