Moscow dispatches say Russian parachutists captured fortified positions behind German lines on the Smolensk front and Soviet forces took two towns in the Vyazma sector. Germans failed to clear the area. Russians also pierced strong fortifications on the Smolensk highway.
Private Charles E. Haas of Maidsville West Virginia was murdered last Thursday night. John W. Stachen, a private missing from Camp Lee, has been charged by the FBI with murder. Haas body found Friday in a thicket near the Peters burg National Park by an air raid drill participant. FBI says a blunt instrument killed Haas. Stachen was seen with Haas Thursday night and faces charges before U S Commissioner Melvin Flegenheimer at Richmond. Stachen, 26, 5 feet 8 inches, 188 pounds, brown hair and eyes, ruddy complexion, had been at Camp Lee two months. Haas had been at Camp Lee since January 27 as an Army volunteer.
A collision in the South End and a report of wild fowl on the Potomac during rain split the first prize from last week's Daily Mail contest. The second prize is divided between tips about a missing youth for five days and a county mill robbery. Tips are accepted on weekdays from 7 30 a m to 1 30 p m.
Early today a trainer plane carrying Orman Stalker aged 23 and Henry Richardson aged 27 crashed seven miles west of Martinsburg in fog. Both men were part of the Henson Flying Service program at Hagerstown airport. The plane went down on the James Orr place between Arden and Mills Gap. Orr, who heard the craft around 3 am, found the wreckage in an apple orchard after dawn. Both occupants were badly mangled. parachutes were present but no attempt to escape. The ignition switch was cut, and there was no fire. Civil Aeronautics Authority in New York City was notified.
John Viola of Yonkers New York likely lives after flipping a coin to decide who would make a cross country flight with instructor Stalker Viola Jost and Richardson won the right to fly but Henry Richardson and Stalker were killed when their plane crashed near Martinsburg.
The Senate finance committee unanimously approved a bill to raise the federal debt limit from 65 billion to 130 billion dollars. The House had set 125.6 billion, while the committee added 5 billion and extended the limit to direct obligations like government corporation bonds. Senator Byrd proposed the amendment and Treasury undersecretary Bell stated no objection.

One person was killed and three injured in an automobile truck collision on Washington boulevard south of Laurel Maryland. The deceased was Charles M Phair 45 of Laurel. The injured Floyd M Lilly Thomas S Phair and Andrew Stanton all of Laurel were taken to Casualty Hospital Washington.
Navy Department informs Marie Teresa Newman widow of Lieut Arthur Lester Newman that his body, lost with destroyer Truxtun in a February gale off Newfoundland, has been found on shore near St Lawrence Newfoundland.
The American Bureau of Shipping announced it suspended publication of its 41st monthly magazine The Bulletin due to censorship requirements. The publication, highly regarded, detailed ship building activities nationwide and other key maritime data.
More than 100 dollars of meat including hams ribs and sausage were stolen from the D. T. Staley farm opposite Benevola. A tire rim and auto battery were taken from the Dodge in the garage. The Lorraine Division, the Fifty-Ninth of World War I, with many Hagerstown and Washington County men, has been recreated by the War Department as one of three new infantry divisions to expand the army to 3,600,000. The 79th World War I unit trained at Camp Meade. its World War II successor at Camp Pickett, Virginia, bears the same Lorraine insignia and links to Free French troops. The original 313th, led by Colonel Claude B. Sweezey, included Maryland Pennsylvania and D C men, and earned fame for capturing Montfaucon on September 27, 1918 at 11:45 a.m.

Two cars were badly damaged and two occupants injured yesterday morning about three miles east of Unionville Maryland. Haagerstown driver Lee Thomas Jolly admitted veering off the concrete and moving onto the left side of the highway in a collision with Oscar L Albaugh’s car from Union Bridge. Mrs Leslie Albaugh and Mrs Mary Affelt of Union Bridge suffered injuries, while Jolly and his wife and young daughter escaped harm.

Fort Meade Maryland March 16 An entire regiment was quarantined today because of one measles case. Earlier only Company C of the 104th Quartermaster Regiment was quarantined due to its members contracting measles. Reassignment of the 29th Division from square to triangular structure spread Company C members, prompting a safety quarantine of the whole regiment. The isolated private, who had measles, has recovered and left the base hospital.
Thieves broke into G. A. Topper’s home at 2440 Virginia Avenue while the family slept. They ransacked the first floor but took no valuables. A separate break-in at the Mary Louise Himes lunchroom near Western Maryland station yielded candy tobacco cigars and a flashlight worth about 15 dollars. Deputy Kenneth A.
