Registers To Sit Extra Day In County
The Board of Election Supervisors announced that starting tomorrow the two permanent registers will sit three days a week to register new voters issue transfers and perform duties. They will still sit Tuesdays Fridays and Saturdays 10 am to 4 pm until further notice. Tomorrow is the last day to change party affiliation within six months of a primary. Washington March 13 A federal sales tax a larger income and corporation taxes and a war profits levy were pushed by lawmakers to raise about 7 billion a year for war financing. The House Ways and Means committee heard Treasury ideas for higher taxes and the National Association of Manufacturers proposed a 4.4 billion dollar sales tax. Some members saw a potential compromise mixing sales and income and corporate levies. Rep Carlson noted possible 1.5 billion from a sales tax and 2 billion each from income and corporate schedules. Morgenthau opened the hearing with a tax proposal.

FBI Agent Slain in Abingdon Restaurant Shootout

Fire on Normandie quickly put out aboard burning liner
A fire suspected to start in rubbish aboard the 83,423 ton liner Normandie, now Lafayette, was controlled in 15 minutes after Coast Guardsmen, a fireboat and engine responded.
