In Laos near Sepone U S B52 bombers pounded the Ho Chi Minh trail while helicopter units near Lang with U.S. and South Vietnamese forces reported heavy rocket and mortar fire from North Vietnamese attackers. Reports say one landing zone endured over 1000 rounds as ground combat intensified.
The United States plans to reduce its B52 bomber force in Indochina by about one third next year, with 51 aircraft to be withdrawn. Most B52s will depart from Carswell Texas by March 31, 1972, halving sorties from about 1,000 per month to a lower rate, according to Air Force officials. The moves stem from a broad reshuffle announced by the Air Force on Wednesday.
Three of the four chief Viet Nam peace talks delegates stayed away with deputies present. Xuan Thuy protested President Nixon’s threats. Nguyen Thi Binh was en route to Romania for a friendship visit. Bruce alone attended, urging serious discussion on cease fire and withdrawal as B52 operations scale down nationwide.

Communities would fund training costs in exchange for service after graduation, addressing low small town incomes and high education costs. About 40 students show interest. Michigan Heart Council cites 174 general practitioners and 90 specialists needed, with 600 family physicians and 400 specialists required statewide. Draft calls rise with July 1 deadline.
Washington AP reports Health and Welfare Secretary Richardson says seven of America’s 20 largest cities have more than one resident on welfare. Central cities Boston Los Angeles Chicago Detroit Washington Pittsburgh Cleveland New York Philadelphia Seattle Newark Milwaukee show high welfare reliance with percentages ranging from about 2.9 to 15.3 percent of their populations.
