Washington County history notes a mid 19th century push to build and improve roads from Frederick to Leitersburg and along the bed of the old Marsh road toward the Pennsylvania line. Turnpikes dominated before tolls were ended by state or county takeover about 35 years ago. Toll houses with long poles guided traffic as fees ranged 10 to 15 cents per vehicle.
