Local Tax Fairness Backlash From National Poll

A national poll by the Advisory Commission on Intergovernmental Relations finds taxpayers dislike the local property tax most and feel federal taxes deliver more value. Among taxes, 34 percent rank local property tax as least fair, with 24 percent for federal income tax, 17 percent state sales tax, and 11 percent state income tax. Regional differences show varied attitudes toward tax policy and incentives, while trust in local government varies by age, education, and income. The study, conducted May with 2006 respondents, is yearly and cross-sectional.

The plan raises crude oil prices to world levels, boosts gas prices by 3 to 5 cents a gallon and home heating oil by 3 to 4 cents, while projecting 200,000 barrels daily in oil savings by 1985. An earlier provision to give oil producers a 65 billion subsidy was rejected 20 to 47.
