Western Egypt hosts a dramatic clash as Erwin Rommel and his mechanized forces push a 100 mile in two days advance toward Matruh, nearing the British main force. Imperial HQ notes three Axis columns within 30 miles of Matruh, while London experts foresee a pivotal next week in the war’s Caucasus and North Africa theater.

William Ray and Robert Jay McNamee aged 20 of Breathersville enlisted in the U S Army via the local recruiting office with recommendations for the Air Corps. They are sons of Mr and Mrs Edward McNamee of Brethedsville, whose mother is the town postmistress.
Gerald Cuddy, 21, defense plant worker, is held on $500 bond with a Tuesday hearing after being charged with assault with intent to rape. Police say he accosted a young waitress near West Washington street, dragged her to an alley, then fled. patrolmen and bystanders chased him and arrested him. Cuddy denies the assault.
Birthday greetings from local buddies were sent at noon today to Major General Russell P. Hartle commander of U S armed forces in Northern Ireland. The messages went by radio via Western Union. Cigarettes and funds will be sent to the soldiers in his command tomorrow. General Hartle is 52 years old today.
The Office of Price Administration announced a four gallon basic unit for the Eastern states as it released a 13 page booklet on the gasoline coupon system. The plan starts July 22 in 17 states and DC with 48 coupons per year to cover about 2,880 miles at 15 mpg, and registration at schools is set for July 9 to 11.
A three alarm blaze at the Florence Nightingale convalescent home in Baltimore trapped elderly patients on the second floor. Police and bystander aid used a painter's ladder to pull three women to safety while firemen rescued the remaining patients, including 83 year old Mrs. Anna Sydnor of Oriole, Md.
Draft Board officials report little change in the status of married men as more registrants moved from 3-A to 1-A under the dependency bill. Officials say most married men remain unchanged despite the new four category system, with the transition affecting only those reclassified into 1-A for possible immediate induction.
Moscow charged Japan with torpedoing the 4,761 ton merchant Angarstroi off the Japanese coast on May 1. Survivors said two Japanese submarines surfaced to aid the crew before another Soviet ship landed them at Dairen. The Soviet radio stated the Angarstroi was sunk by a Japanese submarine after earlier being halted by Japanese warships and escorted to a Japanese port for inspection.
About 11 000 workers at four Yellow Truck and Coach plants in Pontiac went on strike over a demand to compensate for 20 minutes lost during a blackout. The mass meeting cited a long series of minor grievances. Pickets outside the gates but no violence reported. office workers allowed in. The plant is independently run with much stock owned by General Motors. GM says these plants are under a separate contract from the GM UAW agreement.
John W. Garrett, who served as United States Ambassador to Italy from 1929 to 1933, died at his suburban Baltimore home after a year of declining health. The 70 year old resigning candidate for Maryland senator had earlier run in the Republican primary against Joseph S. France and had been Secretary General of the Arms Limitation Conference in Washington in 1921 and 1922.

New York June 24 The American Museum of Natural History has long searched Java and Malaya for the skull of the rhinoceros sandarcus. With Dutch East Indies fallen, the skull could have remained hidden for years. It was found in the museum attic, where it had lain unrecognized for over 70 years and will soon go on display.
