Indenturing Of Domestic Servants From Europe Probed
An investigation by the California State Labor Commission continues into charges that domestic workers from Europe and the British Isles are lured with promises of high living while facing 80 hour weeks and possible destitution. The probe arose after Irish-Canadian journalist Tom McCuaig inspired a citywide series in the San Gabriel Valley Daily Tribune exposing cases where employers refused wages and left workers unpaid. The inquiry, begun after multiple Irish workers came forward, questions the role of employment agencies and federal and state complicity under existing laws.

Superior Court Judge Lewis Drucker said sufficient evidence supported one charge but not the other at Mrs. Radland's preliminary hearing. He ordered a plea date for June 28. Beverly, a Juvenile Hall ward on probation, was taken after a suiter's fatal shooting in the Radland apartment during a struggle over a pistol. The piece also discusses domestic service trafficking and agency profits, noting investigations into foreign domestic workers and potential prosecutions for misrepresentation and overcharging.
