An estimated 500 guerrillas launched a dawn assault 40 miles east of Saigon to overrun a U S armored cavalry bivouac. Eight U S soldiers were killed and 34 wounded in a fierce hourlong battle amid shelling, air support, and heavy machine gun fire as U S warplanes ranged over North Vietnam.
