June 19 report from WATR discusses widespread hardship under dry law. Citizens urge faster change and government takeover of whisky stocks to ensure fair distribution for those legally entitled, criticizing excessive prices and restricted access for medicinal users and the exempt class.
Washington reports a House resolution proposing naming the new Georgetown bridge the Francis Key Bridge to honor the Star Spangled Banner author. Rep John Philip Hill Maryland argues no Washington monument exists for Key and the bridge near his old home would be fitting. Rep McFadden adds a separate motion to recognize the Star Spangled Banner as the national anthem, backed by Sons of the American Revolution and other patriotic groups.
William Funk a young married man from Tome Brook Virginia was riding home when a telegraph wire struck him under the chin causing his skull to crack and break. He was on an ice cream tub on a wagon road near Woodstock and the accident occurred as the wagon moved along. The wire hung from a broken cross-arm and was knocked free as he was jolted off the wagon. Hospital surgeons report severe skull fractures and critical condition.
A local column lists the comings and goings of Fairplay residents including Mrs Clara lifer’s illness improving, Rev McKinley Coffman’s trip to Washington for summer study, and numerous social visits and motor trips by families from Hagerstown Myersville and Loysville. It notes a storm near Car Hale uprooting trees and recalls several gatherings, funerals and a conference at Wiava Lake Indiana. It also mentions a Piles remedy advertisement at the end.
The cost of living rose slightly in May with 23 articles up and 15 down among 43 items used by the Department of Labor for price indices. For the year ending May 16, the overall food category showed a decrease. over nine years since May 1913, food costs rose about 44 percent. In May 18, average family food expenditure rose in 30 cities including Atlanta and Richmond by 8 percent, while costs fell in 20 cities like Boston and San Francisco by about 0.1 percent. Detroit held steady.
Over one hundred and twenty masons gathered at the church where Pastor Rev. Vernon N. Ridgely delivered a sermon with the text Let every man take heed how he builds. The Masonic choir, led by Luther Manick, performed several selections during the evening.
The Interstate Commerce Commission directed 49 railroads to install automatic train control devices on about 6000 miles of track between Baltimore and Cumberland and elsewhere by January 1, 1945. The commission described the system as an experiment in automatic train control.
