Strike vote cast at Cumberland tire plant

Workers at a Cumberland Massachusetts Kelly-Springfield tire plant held a secret strike vote to decide support or opposition. The Wattered Rubber Workers Union conducted a separate vote on Saturday, but results were not announced and the classified section drew some complaint for not informing readers.

Drive Opens to Unionize Steel Mills in Pittsburgh

June 18 1940 campaign for industrial unionization of the steel industry begins with Philip Murray accusing steel operators of thwarting the effort and offering paid vacations and possible wage boosts to deter workers from joining a union led by John L. Lewis. The move risks widening the rift with AFL President William Green as 50 organizers are planned.

Park Concerts Set by Municipal Band in City Park

The Municipal Band led by Peter Buys plans a summer of park concerts with a new band shell. National guest conductors will lead local programs, and top local vocal talent will perform. Frank Simon of the Sousa era appears. dates run from June 21 to August 26 including several Wednesday evenings.

Authorities sought a courteous soft spoken thin man for questioning in the slaying of D. McFarlan Moore East Orange inventor nine hours after Bea trice Moore the victim's daughter described his visit to her father.

Local Monarchs At Convention

Rev. Paul B. Wailington and George D. Hicks returned from the National Monarch convention in Washington June 15 and 16. Wailington joined the credentials committee and helped shift the club objective to Service to Young, with a tour through the Department of Justice escorted by G men. The 1937 convention will be in Binghamton New York. Visitors included J. Scott Lantz Harry C. Main and Dr J Calvin Mower.

Huge Elephant Given Reprieve Ends Death Sentence

In San Francisco on June 18 a restraining order halted the planned execution of a huge elephant named Wally after its trainer, Ed ward Brown, was killed. Judge Frank T. Deasy issued the order after protests by Oakland and San Francisco mayors. Attorney Alexander Mooslin, calling himself a lover of animals, obtained the order in time to stop the killing. Police marksmen had been selected to carry out the execution before the reprieve.

Elephant Kills Keeper Then Faces Death Sentence

A 23 year old elephant named Wally killed keeper Brown after being separated from four female pachyderms. The animal trampled and gored Brown before other keepers subdued it and chained it. The Park Commission ordered the death sentence for the elephant.
