Old Toll Gate House On Route 40 Being Removed At Indian Springs

An old toll gate stone house near Indian Springs on Route 40 is being torn down. The 130 year old rafters date from February 24 1827, marking a historic midway point between Hagerstown and Hancock. Albert Funkhouser, now living with his daughter, recalls the property once housing travelers. The site includes an ancient well and a nearby rebuilt stage inn now occupied by the Lantz Dahoffs. The removal collapses a relic of early regional roads alongside other surviving historic structures in the area.
