The Ha gerstown Chamber of Commerce welcomed twenty one new firms and individuals during the last week, the largest single intake in the chamber’s history. Letters with applications praised the chamber’s constructive work and civic duties, citing prior benefits seen in other cities. The notice notes continued coverage on page 10.
Patrolman G. M. Hopkins and C. W. Farnforth arrived after a radio call to serve as witnesses at the wedding of Dora May Hauser and Francis James Worthen in Sale City. The report notes their presence as needed witnesses during the ceremony.

Washington June 17 A push to extend existing taxes faces a House vote aimed to place a June 30 extension into law. Leaders use a rule suspension to allow 40 minutes of debate and ban amendments while noting deficits for 1935 and 1936 justify avoiding tax expirations.
John Fonner of Washington Pennsylvania died in a hospital after a plane crashed into a crowded Heidelberg street. Brother William Fonner and pilot Ben Swicher, 39, were seriously hurt. Physicians said Fenner may die. Pedestrians scattered as the plane fell in the street without striking anyone.
A Washington couple, a man and a boy, were rescued last night by a party on Carl's pleasure boat below Charles Mill. Their new motor boat lost power about a mile downstream, the couple in swimsuits began swimming for help, and the rescuers on the pleasure craft retrieved the exhausted group and the motor boat later.
Charles H. Rinehart county road supervisor announces the appointment of twenty one foremen to replace fourteen displaced workers under the State Roads Commission economy plan. Washington County gains seven foremen, each overseeing districts and groups of relief workers. Dr Homer E Tabler denies knowledge of any dismissals and cites censorship on the Baltimore office.
Violent deaths claimed eight Maryland residents over the weekend including three automobile fatalities. Two deaths were self inflicted, two drownings, and one fatal shooting. Ray Ellison, 19, shot himself after threatening his 16-year-old brother Sunday morning. Hatch Cook, 71, of Howard County, killed himself in a chair beside his wife as she slept. he had been ill. The first drowning of the week was reported.
The Washington County Welfare association asked for beds bed springs and mattresses this morning and urged donations via the welfare office at phone 2370. Other furniture is welcome as two families in furnished rooms face relocation and have urgent needs.
Governor Cochran declared martial law in Omaha after street car strike riots that left two dead and ordered immediate arbitration. He delivered two ultimatums to unions and company reps: accept a six point plan within 11 hours and finish arbitration by midnight Thursday or face military authority.
Reports indicate the Board will convene to appoint Samuel C. Strite as attorney and Charles O. Ward as clerk. Robert G. Foltz is expected to be elected president, succeeding Robert H. McCauley. In New York June 17 three 13 and 12 year old bootblacks faced arraignment on homicide charges for a hold up in which they allegedly stole a police revolver to enforce a shoe shine trust and shot William Walsh, a 36 year old painter, after a failed robbery attempt.
Residents in the Funkstown hill area report near nightly concerts from a bird believed to be a nightingale. The unseen bird sits in trees and warbles through the night hours, providing unusual nightly entertainment for locals.
Medford Mass June 17 United States Senator Carter Glass of Virginia and actress Cornelia Otis Skinner were among eight persons presented honorary degrees today at Tufts college 79th annual commencement exercises.
Wellesley Mass June 17 Secretary Perkins proposed a six point long range security program headed by public works projects to ease employment in future recessions She urged business to profit while workers gain wage increases as profits rise The plan includes public works technical industry stabilization shorter hours child labor ban free employment bureaus relief for unemployable and balanced progress principles such as high wages steady income and resource conservation
TEHACHAPI Calif June 47 The gates of California's prison for women swung open today to release Clara Phillips the "hammer slayer" after more than 12 years. She said she is not bitter and hopes people will leave her alone. Phillips was convicted of killing Alberta Meadows, a divorcee suspected of an affair with Phillips’ husband, by beating her with a hammer on a secluded road. She expressed gratitude to the husband’s Galveston Texas family for their support.
Toulon France June 17 A young naval aviator denied selling documents to an espionage ring led by a missing blonde Riviera police pursue the woman said to have obtained aerial photographs of Toulon fortifications from Paul Rolland 26 who was captured in a police trap. Secret service learned the girl fled the raid and spent the night dancing in night clubs while Rolland was jailed.
Paul S Burgan 27 formerly of Williamsport died by his own action from gas in his Roslyn apartment kitchen this morning. Catherine A Burgan found him slumped over the gas stove at 12 15 PM after a morning where he complained of illness and planned to rest. Poto mac Edison crew tried to revive him but failed. Burgan, a railroad blacksmith, left no note. Local police were notified.
A pole fell or was touched at the corner of Franklin and Prospect streets this morning causing about 125 dollars damage to a car. The occupant was not injured and the owner’s identity could not be learned.
All persons on relief in Washington County must re-register by June 22 at the local Re-employment Office per orders from relief administrator Harry L. Hopkins. Brewer L. Stouffer, manager, says 400 to 500 have already registered and urges monthly visits to avoid inactive files.
Fire of unknown origin about 1 15 a m today destroyed the residence of Lester Perkins at Trego. The Perkins family was visiting in West Virginia and no one was at home when neighbors discovered the blaze. The fire had gained headway, and none of the contents could be saved. Loss partly covered by insurance.
Italy moves toward a semi war footing with about one million called to arms and gold and war materials sped to East Africa. The Italo Ethiopian arbitration commission to meet again as Mussolini addresses 7,000 veterans at the Colosseum promising strength and unity. Africa expeditionary force expected at 236,000 though Italy vows not to weaken its European front.
The Title Guarantee and Trust Company, closed over two years, will reopen Wednesday under a new name Title Mortgage and Management Company with $600,000 capital and $125,000 paid-in surplus. A Reconstruction Finance Corporation loan backs the move. A 30 percent distribution of $967,880.77 from the closed company was ordered by Judge J. Frank Supplee Jr. in circuit court No. 3 today.
Harrisburg June 17 The Pennsylvania Senate will decide tonight on legalizing Sunday movies and imposing a five cent gasoline tax for two years. The two cent tax proposal is backed by Governor Earle and the Democratic House. Republicans in the Senate may cross to pass it, closing a major budget gap. The bill also allows cities towns and townships to vote on Sunday motion pictures, a change to the sabbath observance law of 1794.
Two brothers Richard Busserd aged 8 and Roscoe Bussard aged 10 sustained injuries after a fall during Frigay on fractured arm. A third unnamed boy, Resse A., reportedly broke an item described as a white playing fad ball during the same Saturday incident.
