In a storm swept evening two East Antietam and East Washington apartments lost roofs. A child clutched her canary as she fled to the street while a man urged his wife to hurry out with valuables. Others fled with only their lives, and insurers report the busiest week in local history as they explain extended coverage and remaining gaps.
Berlin officials report a Soviet sponsored offensive by the Socialist Unity Party to regain control of Berlin city government, expand influence in western zones, and push economic policies in the Russian zone. An early election in Berlin in 1947 is anticipated as American sources monitor Soviet Communist tactics.
St Louis area workers including 3500 streetcar and bus operators walked off the job, halting public transit for a second day. A wage dispute was to be addressed by a U.S. Conciliation Service panel as officials meet with St. Louis Public Service Co. representatives to seek a settlement. Traffic jams and downtown closures persisted with taxi subsidies and car usage rising as offices remained partly closed.
In Oakland California on June 14 a four day key system transit strike threatened 500000 riders until 3000 workers proposed to return to work immediately while negotiations for a contract followed. The AFT unions offered to halt the walkout and resume talks, and the company agreed. Preliminary discussions recessed with optimistic tone.
In an unlucky Friday incident at a local department store Jacob Commer a buyer living at 634 Potomac Avenue fell and was injured and taken to Washington County Hospital. Not long after clerk Maude Henton of Interval Road also fell and broke a leg.
Hagerstown's municipal electric light plant, opened in 1928, has generated a net income of 4,195,275.03 over 18 years after depreciation and expenses, with total plant value over 2.5 million. The city’s population basis shows a 14 dollar per person benefit, while history notes earlier plants and a 1922 expansion funded partly by a 300,660 bond issue. Referendum approval preceded construction as delays and injunctions arose.
The United Nations faced delays on atomic energy control and armament reduction while commissions investigated Palestine and the Balkans. Two defendants Louise Pool and Charles Bowers faced disorderly conduct charges in city court. Magistrate Martin Y. B. Bostetter struck out their guilty pleas and found not guilty after arresting officers failed to appear. Bowers said a party was ongoing when officers entered the Spruce Street home at 745 about 2 am. He noted no one was disturbed. The magistrate emphasized officers must appear to testify when making arrests.
New York actress and model Mary Kirk Brown, 33, was arrested on a disorderly conduct charge after a hair pulling and name calling incident with a rival fan at the Fusari Pellone welterweight bout at Madison Square Garden. Police said Brown and companions disrupted ringside seating, lights were raised during the scuffle, and Brown was taken to a police station for arraignment. Brown sought charges against the Budetta party, but no file was opened against them.
Chambersburg will extend parking meters from six to 18 blocks after Town Council action. About 506 new meters will be bought allowing 24 minute parking for one cent and two hour parking for five cents.
New York June 14 A U S conciliator joined the nation’s shipping dispute amid a looming coast to coast tieup feared if CIO unions walk out when contracts expire Sunday midnight. CIO leader Philip Murray pledged union support and indicated a strike likely, as officials including Joseph Curran and Harry Bridges met to press talks. William Margolis of the Labor Department conciliation service urged continuous sessions to avert a stoppage.
Atlanta police confirmed artist Paul Refoule, husband of slain socialite Peggy Refoule, was arrested on a sodomy charge after lie detector sessions about her murder. Chief Neal Ellis said admissions by a former art student led to the charge while noting truth only appeared when he claimed he did not love his wife. Continued on Page 5.
City Attorney Edward Oswald Jr says a local ordinance bans trains blocking a street crossing for more than five minutes with a fine up to 25 dollars for railroad officers or employees, except during unavoidable accidents. Deputy Lesater Tennagle confirms a freight train blocked a crossing for at least 17 minutes yesterday before traffic moved. Albert L White reports larceny of his pocketbook containing 45 dollars after visiting Harmon’s alley house and sleeping.
Rev. W. F. Ballard, 35, of Washington Springs North Carolina, a former prize fighter, faces a ten-year sentence after conviction for assaulting a 15 year old girl member of his congregation. His wife testified in his defense.
Two new homes in Fairgreen Acres changed hands this week along with several farms and other residences. Total weekly sales value around $125,000 as buyers grow selective and some prices drop to close deals. Model Homes Inc built the Fairgreen Acres homes selling for $11,500 and $12,000. Other noted transfers include Ralph Turner to William Gossard for land in Chewsville Election District at $500 and Robert Siler to Leon Nichols near Halfway at $2,500. Russell Bair to Robert Muritz for four tracts in District No. 18 at $2,000. Tyan Brown to Leon Dixon Smith for a parcel of land.
Ray F Swartz of 282 West Side avenue a carman at Western Maryland Railroad was injured last night and admitted to Washington County Hospital with eye lac erations requiring stitches and possible internal injuries. Six other people sought emergency care for minor wounds. Michael McCormick fell in a barn and sustained scalp lacerations needing stitches. Joseph Gcker had a leg wound after a fall and was treated and discharged. W Paul Henry was treated for abrasions after his taxicab collided with another car. Ruth Ellis received a forehead laceration. Wallace Smith suffered facial and wrist injuries from a cut with a knife or razor. Crowly Jones had scalp wounds with unclear cause.
A 16 year old St Paul girl Margaret Kueppers on a Northwest Airlines flight to Washington joined by her parents as graduation gift was reported missing after the Capital airliner she boarded from Chicago failed to reach its destination. Her relatives in Washington wired officials to confirm she had started the trip.
Rescue parties rush toward a burned wreckage located on a Virginia West Virginia border mountain top northwest of Leesburg. Fifty aboard likely perished as DC-4 aircraft exploded or tore apart after last radio contact en route from Chicago to Washington. Investigations follow prior crashes at Port Deposit and LaGuardia.
June 14 Leesburg Virginia reports a Capital Airlines four engine plane crashed on a Blue Ridge slope last night with 50 aboard. Aerial surveys found charred wreckage scattered 200 yards through scrub, with no signs of survivors among 47 passengers and three crew. Only a few pieces remained intact near the center of the burn scar. Continued on page 2.
Continuous rains in the county boosted this month’s total rainfall to near normal. J A Miller of Keddysville and a local observer reported .70 inches overnight, bringing June to about three inches. Hagerstown measured .52 inches by 7 30 pm with more likely in a morning downpour. Reservoirs at Edgemont and Smithsburg are full as cooler weather returns after a 90 degree heat spike. Farmers face planting delays and late harvests due to persistent cool wet conditions.
Rep Beall of Maryland introduces a bill to transfer Catoctin Park near Thurmont to the National Capital Parks Service to expand public facilities and services. The Catoctin Recreational Demonstration Project includes Shangri La used by presidents and war leaders with fishing streams and hiking trails.
