Maryland Comptroller Tawes faced scrutiny over a pleasure trip using a state car and gasoline coupons, with a panel to rule on possible misuse of a "C" ration. Attorney Evans submitted Tawes' account, detailing trip distance of about 1600 miles and 87 gallons used, while a libel arrest followed for publisher Rives Matthews.
The speaker describes changing the wedding location from Washington to Columbus Georgia after graduation. He used a state registered car and "C" gasoline coupons for a 1600 mile trip, totaling 97 gallons. He consulted Mr Evans on ration violations and admits using coupons for his son’s wedding was a violation. Governor O Conor appointed him State Property Officer in February 1942. He says inquiries about other states’ handling of Civilian Defense equipment occurred, but that this was incidental to seeing his son wed after his commission.
Hundreds of youths in Hagerstown and nearby areas canvass the city to collect waste fats and grease for powder production to fire shells and bombs. The Maryland Theatre hosts a morning matinee next Saturday with free admission for a one pound fat container.
Associate Judge Chas. W. Woodward sentenced Luther B. Tarr of Brunswick to six months in county jail and fined him $300 for operating gaming devices. He called slot machines "a vicious thing" that robs people of their money and noted the raid on May 2 uncovered a horse race game and several slots.
The Hagerstown Lodge No. 378 B P O Elks announce a Flag Day ceremony Sunday evening June 18 at 7:80 o'clock in City Park. The event features the Hagerstown Municipal Band conducted by Dr Peter Buys with Exalted Ruler Charles W Miller leading introductory remarks and Vernon M Miller recounting flag history. Congressman J Glenn Beall will be principal speaker. The program includes Star Spangled Banner, Pledge, altar services, Auld Lang Syne, and America. A band concert follows. the Flag Day committee is chaired by Ralph A Sheeler with Richard C Munson Charles L Mobley Howard W Rohrer George W Fisher Ralph C Bair and L M Dunaway.
Four years after Pangborn Public Park dedication in Hagerstown, the June display of roses returns in full bloom. Visitors stroll to the sunken gardens and picnic grove while floral experts hail the display as the region’s finest. Nearby Pangborn Corporation grounds show hedges and evergreens framing the park as workers support the war effort.
Washington officials announced that shoe stamp No 18 becomes valid on June 16 and will allow the purchase of a pair of shoes until autumn likely October. The Office of Price Administration expects about four months of validity, similar to stamp No 17, with a fall expiration possible. No specific shoe type is mandated for purchase with the stamp.

Seven generals were awarded the Distinguished Service Medal by the War Department for their roles in the North African campaign. Lt. Gen. Carl Spaatz led the 42nd Air Force and Lt. Gen. Omar Bradley commanded the 2nd Corps in North Africa. Other honorees include Maj. Gen. Terry De La Mesa Allen, Maj. Gen. Alfred Gruenther, Maj. Gen. Thomas B. Larkin, Maj. Gen. Hugh J. Gaffar, and Maj. Gen. Lowell W. Rooks for leadership in invasion planning, North African operations, and services of supply.
United States and Britain recognized the new Argentine government along with neutral nations as Sweden. Recognition followed a decree barring transmission of outgoing coded messages from the overthrow regime. Japan had already recognized, with Germany and Italy's ambassador visiting the Foreign Office.

The June report on parking violations shows a likely rise from May as city police tagged about 125 cars in the southern city section for parking between 1 and on until 4 a m over two nights. Police HQ fines are paid by offenders claiming no garages were available or that they were too lazy to go to a garage. The ordinance bans 1 to 4 parking to keep streets clean.
Washington June 12 President Roosevelt said Congress must decide on new taxes and inflation policy. He noted a possible sales tax as a last resort and indicated he may send a tax message before summer vacation. He emphasized compulsory savings and taxes as needed to close an inflationary gap and discussed taxation theory.
Sharpsburg news notes travel and family visits. Mrs A A Kerlin left for Chestnut Hill West Virginia to stay with daughter Mrs Hayes Cronke. Mrs Ed Twisgs returned to Cumberland after visiting brother Clinton Swain. The Eavey family from Baltimore visited J W Earvey. Mrs Glenn Carnahan left to join husband in U S Army at Camp Shelby. Mary Gardner Thomas Houser and Samuel Houser of Washington called for the funeral of John Houser. The Lumms visited daughter Mrs Lester Marshall Beaver Creek. William Howard returned to New Cumberland after furlough with his parents. Frank Hebb Brunswick and Ted Snave ly Boonsboro visited Alice Kauffman. Miss Ethel Thomas of Atlanta is visiting her parents. Harvey Dorsey and son James Dorsey, stationed at Camp Wheeler, with Charlton Kauffman of Martinsburg.
Allied air forces resumed heavy bombing of Duesseldorf and Ruhr targets with American four engined bombers and RAF planes. The German High Command reported losses on both sides as raids extended to Wilhelmshaven and Cuxhaven with fighter interceptions and substantial damage to housing and public buildings.
Chewsville School surpassed county peers by selling defense stamps and bonds raising 17451 dollars and 25 cents, enough to fund nineteen full jeeps. A four room school of 150 students collected scrap metal, tin foil, keys, and razor blades with full volunteer effort from students, teachers, and families.
A. V. Capano of Donora Pennsylvania said he was trying to catch his Congressman when arrested on Route 40 near Boonsboro for speeding. Deputy Leister Isanogle clocked him at 70 mph and Capano posted 1745 dollars collateral before Magistrate Elmer G. Miller.
