The Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond reports department store sales in the Wilth District for January to May rose 6.2 percent from 1939 to 1940. May sales were up 4.4 percent over May of the previous year across South Carolina North Carolina Virginia DC Maryland and most of West Virginia. Eight of 57 reporting stores posted larger May figures than in 1999.
