Governor Summoned in Test Action in Maryland Circuit Court

Baltimore June 12 Governor Nica heads a list of ten witnesses summoned by the state to testify in the gross receipts tax test case opening today in Circuit Court Number 2 before Judge J. Frank Supplee Jr. The constitutionality of the levy is challenged by four merchants acting for a state wide organization. The tax and automobile titling tax yielded 166 027 04 for May with 14 000 returns remaining. Witnesses include Comptroller Gordy Speaker Emanuel Gerfine Joseph McCusker Lee Dopkin Harry Greenstein Joseph Lanigan and Dr Donald Hooker. John Raine was the only witness summoned by the complainants who later withdrew and filed an individual action.

Morro Castle to be scrapped at Baltimore docks

Morro Castle, once a luxury liner, is being dismantled at Union Shipbuilding Company in Baltimore. Forty workers with cutting torches have removed stacks and much of the upper deck. Plant superintendent G J McVicar says seven months remain to complete the scrapping, leaving only steel plate and other ship materials.

New Charge Filed By Sheriff Alton

ANNAPOLIS Maryland June 12 Two additional charges were filed Tuesday against Col Robert Bowie Owens of Harwood held in the hospital of the Anne Arundel county jail accused of assault with intent to kill Owens a scientist and former Director of the Maryland Academy for Sciences was taken into custody for pistol point yesterday by Sheriff Joseph W Alton and his chief deputy Michael F Carter The Sheriff later appeared before Police Magistrate Joseph M Armstrong at local police headquarters and swore out two additional warrants One charges Owens with carrying a concealed weapon and attempting to use it when he was arrested by the Sheriff the second charges him with resisting an officer and threatening to shoot Deputy Sheriff Marshall and Officer Ward

A bungalow storeroom and vacant lot at Virginia and Lincoln avenues sold in front of the Court House yesterday afternoon by auctioneer Fred M. White for 45 725 to Clarence Keedy. White also sold the Kaylor farm at 105 acres in Beaver Creek district for 7550. J C Snyder sold the Harshman property at Halfway for 2500 and a 634 acre farm in Indian Springs district for 10000.

Hancock High School Graduates Largest Class in County

A class of 32, the largest in Hancock High School history, received diplomas at the auditorium commencement. Principal Douglas Bivens led the exercises with speeches by Odell Rosen salutatorian Tia Munson valedictorian and Lawrence Faith class representative. Awards included the Mary Rinehart Cahill citizenship medal to Fannie M. Unger and top scholastic honors to Munson and Rosen.

Degrees were awarded to three local boys at Johns Hopkins University's 59th commencement. Free Bridge Plan Discussed At Meet

Considerable impetus was given to a movement for a free bridge linking Williamsport Maryland and West Virginia or a Pont across the Potomac at Hagerstown.
