Orphans Home Reports May Allotment and Health
At the Washington County Home for Children the May meeting of the Board of Managers chaired by President C Harry Keller reported 53 children at the institution on May 1st, with 1 moved to family and 2 returned to mothers leaving 50 on May 31st. Eleven mild German measles cases occurred in May, lasting 48 hours and clearing before month’s end. no other illness or accidents were noted. There were 33 children in private families on May 1st, with 1 replaced leaving 34 in families on June 1st. The Home seeks permanent homes in private families and invites interested inquiries. A resolution thanked donors, and a strawberry and ice cream festival on the Home lawn was held, disrupted slightly by a storm. the Women’s Auxiliary and Home managers praised the event and ongoing support.

Plans Probe Off Stream Closing Near Hunting Creek
Swepson Earle, state conservation commissioner, said a probe will examine closing Hunting Creek from Catoctin Furnace preserve to the stream’s outlet where President Hoover fishes. The issue follows a protest letter by James E. Solt published in a Frederick Maryland paper. Solt and locals cleared debris until land at Catoctin Furnace was bought by Lawrence Richey, secretary to the president, after which the stream was posted. Earle noted Richey has worked with state and federal agencies to establish a trout nursery in the area, potentially producing 100,000 trout annually for sportsmen, a priority he says outweighs the stream’s closure.
