Loss of Carrier Reported By Navy
Washington June 6 Loss of the United States escort carrier Block Island by enemy action in the Arctic was announced by the Navy. The cause was not explained. Block Island was the first American aircraft carrier known lost in the Atlantic in the war. Commanded by Capt. Francis M. Hughes of Selma Alabama, a native of Charlottesville Virginia, the carrier was launched June 6 1942. The Block Island was the 158th Navy ship lost in the war. One other escort carrier Liscome Bay has been sunk in action during the Gilbert Island landings last November.

Rehearsal and Concert Preview at Hagerstown Park
Rehearsal Monday evening cleared skies as the Hagerstown Municipal Band and a large school chorus practiced at the band shell in City Park. Dr Peter Buys led the children with special hand accompaniments. Sunday's concert opens the summer series with vocal solos and choirs and a temporarily enlarged band shell for 500 to 600 performers. A Flag Car exercise and an address by Brig Gen Joseph C Bryan will follow. The band will perform popular tunes and the chorus will join after intermission. The night also saw a theft report on a car near Franklin Court with a coat dress play suit and two valuable letters taken.
