Stribling Fails In Bid For World Heavyweight Title
In Cleveland on July 3 1931 William Lawrence Stribling the fifth pride of Georgia challenged Schmeling for the world heavyweight title. Referee George Blake stopped the bout with 14 seconds left in the 15th round granting Schmeling the victory by technical knockout. Attendance reached 37396 with receipts of 249415. Stribling endured a severe body assault and faded late, having been counted out in the 11th round and near collapse as Blake halted the fight. A rumored right-hand injury in training seems to have limited his power. Stribling died in October 1933 from injuries suffered in a motorcycle accident near Macon Georgia.
