County increases tax levy for 1935-36 budget
The Board of County Commissioners set the 1935-36 tax rate, raising nine cents over last year to total 54 cents and nine mills for schools, with the state rate steady at 22 cents. The levy funds $407,699 for schools, up from $341,538, and includes salaries for teachers under a recent act. Bellevue and fire departments receive higher sums. the Washington County Hospital gets $2,500. The basis taxables amounts to $74,310,827, up over $100,000. Local plane succeeds in desert trip
The first aerial crossing of the Sahara Desert was accomplished by two Hagerstown built planes flown by Eugenio G. Minetti and Count Leonardo Bonzai from Oran to Timbuctu in a Fairchild three place cabin. The voyage covered more than 1600 miles through Algeria French Sudan Nigeria Senegal and Morocco. The aircraft and Warner Super Scarab engine performed perfectly. Minetti reported10 000 kilometers completed across Sahara and Africa. The flight attracted wide interest at stops along the tour. The ship was shipped from Hagerstown in August 1934 and had logged thousands of miles in Europe.
